Lawn soil composition for Cyprus

I’m in the process of doing up my garden (at long last  ) so I’m very concerned about the soil I need to introduce as a permanent foundation of an envisaged lush green garden mostly comprised of Buffalo grass and specially selected Cypriot trees/plants.

I’ve spoken to a number of people in the soil business here in Cyprus who have those filtering, munching, mixing, and what have you machines etc, but all I’m getting is a wide range of conflicting views; they all seem to think they’ve got the perfect formula but none of them agree! :?

Pretty pissed off, I contacted the Department of Agriculture to ask if there is a standard ratio of materials to create that perfect lawn soil and they came up with yet another informal formula which goes…

For every 10m^3 use:

3 Red soil.
5 Brown/Black soil
1 River sand.
1 Sheep manure

I’d very much appreciate any info, experiences, recommendations, etc that you may have on this matter as I wouldn’t want to screw up in the most critical phase of gardening. Thanks in advance.

Regards, GR.

Well I just use a shower room upstairs for mine , Plenty of drainage required and 12 hours light a day ( I find that ordainary flourescent tubes are fine) I dont have 10^m3 just approx 1 sq m , this yeilds approx 4 ounce each 2 weeks. using 4 ordainary black buckets (as used by grump)

You dont need all fancy calculations just plenty of light and water

We are talking about the same grass here aren't we :!:

Relaid my parent's lawn here in North London four or five years ago. Still very lush and green. Never done it before and won't do it again cos it was really hard work but am very pleased and proud of the results.

Time of year is very important, not sure now is the best time in CY to do this????, even with a new diatrisi???

After getting rid of the existing very badly worn lawn, I dug it over with a rotavator machine. Then dug in loads of a loamy top-soil, and loads of peaty compost, and a few packets of growmore fertiliser, and loads and loads of sharp sand for better drainage. Rotavated it again.

Then levelled it with a long straight edge and left it a few weeks and rolled it with a heavy roller.... and finished off with laying a fine turf. Still needed lots of watering for days and days, even in a pretty wet English Spring.

Mate, might be a good idea to contact one of the golf courses, as their greens have to be green right.

To be honest anything grows in cyp soil. All I know is that red soil is not suitable for fruit trees, something to do with not enough acid i the soil.

Next best would be a landscape firm.

I hate perfect lawns.

Much better to cultivate a natural meadow look, with lots of flowering weeds for the insects ... :D

What's wrong with good old mud? Much easier to maintain.

Reh CBBB ... don't you know the first thing about "Soil Erosion". You can't keep mud under control  You need roots to bind it ...

Go teach them rootless Turks ...

Creating a Wildflower Meadow.

Creating a wildflower meadow or area is all about creating the right condition for the wild flowers that naturally grow in your area. Unlike most of the work you will do in your garden adding organic matter and improving the fertility of your soil a wildflower meadow requires lean and poor soil. The reason for this is that wildflowers need these impoverished soils to keep the competition from more rampant plants such as grass at bay.

... Easy peasy! :D
