Lawn soil composition for Cyprus

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

I will be attempting to throw down some grass seeds in my garden in the next 2 weeks. Really don't know how its going to go as my garden is on a slope. I have to pull out some weeds first then attempt to flatten the area, which is going to be pretty tricky. Will let you know how I get on

So basically you're now trespassing on someone else’s crust!

Thanks for the laughs Richard!

Why bother in Cyprus? Go with a mediterranean garden.

Mediterranean garden - Traditional old Cypriot style:

Weeds
Large plastic table with plastic tablecloth pegged down on it
Lots of old chairs
At least one old washing machine and a good few car parts
Lots of old disused oil drums in varying sizes (you can even put plants in them but don't have to)
Dogshite and some sort of wire enclosure for the dog.
Crates of empty beer bottles.
Some trees for shade (but lots of washing lines strategically placed can suffice)
At least a 5 skewer bbq
Television plugged in thro the open window (optional)
Wire netting fencing.

Sorted.

I’m in the process of doing up my garden (at long last  ) so I’m very concerned about the soil I need to introduce as a permanent foundation of an envisaged lush green garden mostly comprised of Buffalo grass and specially selected Cypriot trees/plants.

I’ve spoken to a number of people in the soil business here in Cyprus who have those filtering, munching, mixing, and what have you machines etc, but all I’m getting is a wide range of conflicting views; they all seem to think they’ve got the perfect formula but none of them agree! :?

Pretty pissed off, I contacted the Department of Agriculture to ask if there is a standard ratio of materials to create that perfect lawn soil and they came up with yet another informal formula which goes…

For every 10m^3 use:

3 Red soil.
5 Brown/Black soil
1 River sand.
1 Sheep manure

I’d very much appreciate any info, experiences, recommendations, etc that you may have on this matter as I wouldn’t want to screw up in the most critical phase of gardening. Thanks in advance.

Regards, GR.

My brother had problems growing vegetables in his garden while watering from his well. After some time he realized his well water had high levels of Boron, common in Cyprus. If you are on a well you should look into this.
Soil composition is important, so is water quality.

Last time I passed through Episkopi I noticed the lawns and playing fields looked in great shape! I'd drop by one of the SBAs and get some advice from the UK services groundsmen if I were you, GR!

Does anyone know how to get hedges to grow evenly? I have a hedges made up of about 12 plants but they look like Salvador Dali designed my garden because they all grow unevenly.

I thought that's all to do with regular pruning... no?
