Which Diaspora did Best? USA, UK or Aussies ...

Postby Oracle » Sat Feb 27, 2010 12:03 pm

We were en route to the States to join some (Greek) relatives. But, due to some unforeseen glitch, we ended up in the UK. Most of my dispersing relatives (Cypriots) went to Australia (now numbering 300 :D ).

I can't complain (?) about my time in the UK; but I sometimes wonder how things might have been different, depending on which of these other main sinks we ended up in.

Does anyone have any definite feelings, one way or the other, based on their own, or other relatives', experiences?

Which of these host countries turned out to be the best choice, and why?
:D

Was this a silly question? :?

Are people still too full of pain, at having left the homeland ....

Oh dear. Two and a half hours and no one responded? Will I do?

Sad that you have to bump your own thread - perhaps no one was interested?

Would love to discuss you and yours choosing not to live in Cyprus but I have a social engagement to go out to!

Oh look, nearly 3 hours and still no one (of any significance) has responded.

Patience, patience; the tales of 'woe and boast' will soon come flooding in ....

P.S. > Gasman, don't bother to derail, this isn't about the necessity of leaving Cyprus, but who fared better in the various (necessary?) outposts!

The Free Areas is also the home of a Diaspora but in the end Xenithia sucks balls. San thn Kyrenia den eshei! You can make all the money in the world but at this stage you cannot buy the life you had in Kyrenia. This is why "compo" is no substitute for restitution. You can make money if you work hard & have a quarter of a brain but can you put Humpty Dumpty back together again in Kyrenia?

I completely share this view, especially having lived in Cyprus my formative years, and intermittently latterly.

But, I wonder how the next generation feels. If they are so detached that they can make a different evaluation ...

Well, I was referring to Gasbag.

But, would you have become so "magnificent" if you had stayed in Cyprus, or moved to more competitive USA or laid-back Australia? :D

Threads are a learning experience. Silences say as much as responses. :D

I know there is a lot of pain because >90% were probably enforced through economic or political reasons.

But, I just wanted to get some idea of who, and which ones, felt they had opted for the better of the three most likely host countries.
