I think it is wrong to think of Sydney as a laid back place. People are very competitive and life is very fast paced (maybe because of the cocaine). Melbourne is much more laid back and welcoming to foreigners but it is harder to make a buck there. I plan on a move to Melbourne in the next few years.

Strewth! You are full of shit mate!

Do you want to know something. My old man came to Australia, almost as a qualified Chef. As a Cypriot born British Subject, who was then naturalized as an Aussie, and only after living in Australia for a few years, and with broken English, he became a Chef in the Aussie Army whilst the country was at war with North Vietnam(not bad for a "racist" country). I was born and grew up in the country mate, so don't talk to me about racism because you don't have any idea what your talking about. I remember getting beat up by Victorian coppers, and my revenge was smashing their cars by throwing big rocks through their wind screens. In my youth, I bordered on semi hyperactive delinquency due to this racism, but that was a long time ago!

Since this is the way you feel about Australia, then I suggest you join Bir and leave us "Super Aussies" alone.

No need for a "killer instinct" to make money in this country. All you need is half a brain. Are you adequately equipped?

Why is it that nobody who ever got slapped around by the cops ever deserved it?!

Because no copper has the right to smack around anyone, even the most hardened criminal!

And you call yourself Epictetus...

Hey listen here mate!

I grew up in a 2 horse Victorian town. There were only 2 coppers in the town. After the Army, my father owned a prominent business in the Victorian highlands. We owned race horses and a restaurant. 2 coppers from Melbourne, came to our shop to eat, after boozing at the pub. They then, for some reason, began some racial innuendos which upset my old man. He did not know they were cops. He lost his cool and a scuffle broke out as he wanted them out of the restaurant. They stabbed him in the process and he nearly died. 2 bikies, who were in the restaurant at the time, took to the coppers and gave them a hiding. The coppers got in their vehicle and sped of. They had a rollover outside of the town. The road toll increased by 2.

The next day, the whole Victorian Police Force arrived in town. They were gunning for my old man who was clinging for life. They were also gunning for the bikies. We were in deep shit, until the racial card was pulled and the case was dropped like a hot potato.

I was 11. I remember walking to school, and being harassed day and night by these coppers. They use to chase me and intimidate me. So I decided to throw BIG rocks at their cars. We only had 2 police cars in this town, and thanks to me, they were both unusable at one particular juncture.

Like I said, they deserved it all! :D

Interesting thread Oracle.

I spent some time in Australia, I found the intense and dark undercurrent of racism in that society very, very disturbing.

Aussie Cypos I find are not as bright as their UK/US and SA counterparts. I don't know if it is the dumbing down of the culture, too much sun, or what. They just aren't that mentally agile.

Cypriots from South Africa i find tend to have a chip on their shoulder a lot of the time. They were used to living in big houses with Kaffirs waiting on them hand and foot, then they came to Cyprus after apartheid collapsed and were forced to live in normal homes and wipe their own behinds like the rest of us. This tends to make them bitter and they complain a lot about Cyprus. I like them though, they are decent people if a little stiff and humourless.

USA Cypriots assimilate very quickly with the Greek Americans, they lose the Cypriot accent after a while and it comes to the point where you can't tell the kalamarathes from the horkatous in Astoria

UK Cypriots often come divided into two strata: the working class, 'I think i'm black' rudeboy type from Haringey, and the more educated Southgate / Barnet types who study accountancy and stay single and live with mummy until they are 45

One thing for sure: the people who left Cyprus for whatever place over the ages were the best. The very cream of society. The hard workers, the risk takers, the ones who did not take their fate lying down. They upped sticks and endured loneliness, racism and isolation in order to build a better future for themselves and their families.

All the sh1t got left behind on the island. The lazy, the feckless, those who could not be bothered. They sponged off their relatives abroad or got government jobs through meson or set up businesses ripping off tourists.

That's why the repatriatd Cypriots are a different quality (despite the whinging Afrikanous) and far more honest, hardworking and civilized than our local brethren.

We are superior genetic material.

Our parents proved it.

If Australia was racist, they would not allow over 280,000 immigrants per year. Put it this way, Australians are no more racist than you are judging from you racist posts and 'experiences' and from Cypriots when they poke fun at the Amerikanaki Cypriot or the Kangaroo Cypriot. So you can keep your judgment to yourself!

Just don't come here again, if we are sooo bad and beneath you and inferior to Cypriots, American Cypriots and UK Cypriots.

I can tell you a thing or 2 about racism, but Australians are no where as racist as you superior Hellenes.

This racist nonsense is just far too exaggerated, just like the 'boozing Aussie' stereotype. Fact is, you will be hard pressed to find a friendlier, a more happy and easy going lot!
