Don't like the inferred implication in the OP and Title that GB CYs are the Diaspora of CY! Everyone knows it's the other way around and CY has become the Diaspora of the The CY Republic of North London.

Are there any Cypriots in South London?

No it's not. Just a different way to ask which Diaspora did best in their respective host countries.

You know, sports opportunities, friendlier 'natives' etc etc

"Which Diaspora did Best?" could also mean "Which group are the most (financially) successful" and that of course would have to be the Charlies due to their superior numbers.

It was a general "Best" ... it was only a title, you can't be specific. I hadn't even thought about financial ... that's the least important.

Seems the Aussie lot can retain a modicum more of the Cypriot lifestyle with the better weather for example.

The US ones seem to have had more opportunities in Government than the UK has allowed.

Little things like that ....

C'mon!

Oracle I think migration to Australia is a much more recent phenomenon (late 70's, 80's and then it tapered off in the 1990's.) So zero to hero success stories are still very common . Once you are established in a place you become complacent. Kids or grandkids of immigrants or refugees do not do as well as the refugees themselves. The success stories are not the product of "opportunities" in country A or B it has more to do with killer instinct. Australia is still xenophobic in many ways so to be successful you have to pretend you are a" Super Aussie" including playing Rugby(In NSW), Cricket , Surfing and talking about Aussie shares when there may be better options available. This how you win contracts from your traditional Aussie. You can never talk about where you come from and the problems. I learned that you cannot say for example" Who cares if Indonesia invades, I will just learn Indonesian". Did not go down well. You have to move away from traditional Cypriot circles to make money or achieve success. I have friends who have two personalities one for doing business with Aussies and one for Cypriots. I have met a few kids who have come here from Cyprus more recently. Unfortunately they do last here. Especially the kids who are shipped over here by the Cypriot banks.Talk about boutiropeda. No killer instinct. If their uncle did not get them a job at the bank they would only be suitable for stacking supermarket shelves. I think there is a big difference between Refugees versus immigrants. Immigrants left Cyprus because they were hungry. Refugees came from every stratum of society. A perfect recipe for killer instinct is the situation where you had a decent standard of living but then you are forced to live like shit. If you never had money you will not be as humiliated.

I think it is wrong to think of Sydney as a laid back place. People are very competitive and life is very fast paced (maybe because of the cocaine). Melbourne is much more laid back and welcoming to foreigners but it is harder to make a buck there. I plan on a move to Melbourne in the next few years.
