The Cypriot Community of Melbourne and Victoria honored last Saturday in a special event the Olympic champion Lidia Ierodiakonou- Lasila.
In the event, the president of the Cypriot Community, Mr. S. Aggelodimou, welcomed the public, declared Lidia as a member of the community for life and he offered her a crown made of olives.
Mr. Aggelodimou underlined that the Cypriot house is always open for Lidia and he expressed the pride of the Cypriots for her performance.
Lidia thanked the sports fans and spoke many times about the support by her parents and her husband. She also thanked the Cypriot Community for the event and the honor.
The ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Yannis Iakovou, was also present in the event and gave her the gold medal of the Cypriot Olympic Committee and a diploma undersigned by the president of the Committee, Mr. Ouranios Ioannidis.
The federal member for Calwell, Mrs. Maria Vamvakinou, the political deputy of the opposition Mr. Nikos Kotsiras and a political deputy of the Labor Party also spoke for this excellence. In their speeches, they all paid a compliment for Lidia and they presented her progress and her victory. Lidia is a girl who, despite the difficulties, used her passion, her faith and her love for the sport and with her victory made two countries, Australia and Cyprus, proud of her.
