I've never really liked him...

But then recently I've started watching Qi and he comes over rather well...

And then this evening, I watched this speech!

He is now my hero.... Image

Thank you for bringing this speech by Stephen Fry , perhaps the most highly regarded of intellectuals of the 21st century , to our attention. He truly is an intellectual to such a degree that next to him we are all intellectual minions !!
I have always admired his brilliant command of expressive English . All that speech without notes , what a brilliant intellectual , of course his analysis of the Catholic church and of Islamic faith poignantly real !!

In tellyland perhaps! Stephen Fry has made a very nice niche for himself as the media luvvie with an apparently huge brain just because he uses (pre-prepared?) unusual words and appears as the (pre-prepared?) fount of all knowledge on various telly programmes. Yes, he gave a good speech, and yes, I agree with his sentiments, but let's face it - what an easy target! Personally, I find him quite shallow, apparently quite 'needy' and requiring of public love and approval. He's a mediocre actor and presenter, has obviously used his Oxbridge connections to the utmost, plays up to the image of a plummy-voiced Oscar Wilde-type figure whenever he can - and IMHO has actually shown little evidence of true intellectual originality or rigour despite the opportunities he's had to do so.

If you enjoyed Fry's contribution to that isquared debate - isquared have their own YouTube channel where you can watch more (and watch the rest of the speakers in that one - tho Fry stole the limelight).

I'm a great admirer of Stephen Fry and disagree with just about everything Talisker said about him.

Talisker , Stephen had some severe psychological problems some years back but , rehearsed or otherwise , his command of the intellectual English language is beyond iquestion. He is an intellectual and I admire him.

He is not required by me to prove his 'true intellectual originality or rigour'.

He has entertained me and countless others on radio, tv, film and with his books for more than 20 years. Currently hosting one of the most popular quiz shows on Brit TV - I think he's done alright for himself.
