Is this good news or bad news?
Any predictions for the future of the island?

After reading 12 pages of comments my humble opinion is this:
1. The collapse of the talks is bad news, especially for the TC side. Their misery will continue despite Turkey's assistance. The occupying Turkish troops will stay to safeguard the poor population in the north. After 36 years, the TC side realized that this situation is a big mistake. The TC side realized that they would be better off under the EU umbrella instead of the Turkey umbrella. The TC side want a better life for themselves, that's why they are talking to us... they want out but afraid to admit it, claiming security reasons.
2. I don't see why the TC side worries so much about security. I am convinced the GC side is not planning another attack when the Turkish troops leave. What gains can we possibly have if we attack the TC?
3. 10 years from today, Turkey may initiate new talks to solve the Cyprus problem, only to meet the EU deadline, not because Turkey wants the TC side to have a better life. Face it, The Cyprus problem is "small potatoes" for Turkey right now. Simply put, Turkey is facing big problems and chose to put aside the Cyprus issue.
4. The GC side would prefer a solution based on UN resolutions. Anything short of that would be a painful compromise. Definately, if things stay as they are, is not considered a "success", but a setback. We all know how important is the solution... the clock is ticking... no solution is negative.
The ball is on the TC side of the court. How are they going to play it?
