And what do you suppose they would've done once they reached the SBAs?

Believe it or not some are not up all day and all night posting on this or other forums.

Anyway, regards the SBA's. Nothing.

Exactly! The British commander of the time, ordered that large union jacks be hoisted right around the perimeter of the SBAs! If that wasn’t a clear message to Turkey, I don’t know what was…

Exactly ?

The above was in response to this .....

The "whole island"? Found it difficult enough to take one-third.

Maybe the the British commander hoisted it to divert the Turkish army away from the SBA's. Perhaps he hoisted it because he thought the advance would not stop. Perhaps it was to save his bacon ? Who knows ? Maybe there's a credible link to tell us why he hoisted flags all around the bases ?

The point is, the speed of advance between 15-17 August could have continued south, all the way to Larnaca, Limassol & Pahos (imo) IF Turkey constantly needs "military adventures and invasions and occupations " as Bill put it.

Read PM Callaghan's thoughts on the matter. When he was shitting bricks thinking he may have to take on Turkey in 74.

 Britain has been a nuclear superpower for decades, whereas Turkey was and still is a 3rd world conventional tossing!

It's by no accident you're winning the poll by a landslide...

I know from friends who were in the British Army based at the SBA.s during the invasion that the Turks were warned in no uncertain terms as they approached the bases: "one more Fucking step and you'll be fighting against us"; they didn't advance any further.

I think the whole problem was down to the Soviet Union courting the Cypriot Government at the time and the fear of the allies that the Soviets would get a base on Cyprus; press the Greek Junta to stage a coup and press the Turks to invade to help the Turkish Cypriots and that's your problem solved. Very American.

That's very strange because TA fired into the SBAs twice and they were asked to appologise and not do it again. The bombs exploding apparently stired their tea a little too much. They only wanted their tea stired slightly.
Strange how the SBA did not return fire once.

Hello YFred; Hope you are keeping well.
If you read the official history books they do refer to several skirmishes between the TA and BA during the invasion when the TA tried to encroach on SB area.

Anyone want to have a go about giving a serious answer to this question?

...if turkey continued, it would have started WW III.

...if turkey continued, the act would have been clearly an invasion without an alternative explanation.

...if turkey continued, they would have a population as aggressive as the Kurds to contend with.

...if turkey continued, they would have not have become the regional power, but a pariah.
