British bases in Cyprus... time to clear them off.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

British bases in Cyprus... time to clear them off.

Postby georgios100 » Wed Feb 17, 2010 3:09 am

Can someone tell me why these British bases are still here?
Peacekeeping duties? Spying duties? Another form of security for the TCs? TCS have thousands of Turkish troops "protecting" them.
Do we really need these guys? Maybe the Queen forgot about them.
Are they here to protect the British real estate investments in the north?
What's the best (and quickest) way to get rid of them?

I'm sure the Cypriots don't need them. As to why they are here - do your homework and find out.

the only way to get rid of them is to agree on a new constitution without a treaty of guarantee.

Either that or stop all supply of strongbow coming into the island.

What makes you think the Brits would assume the TCs need protecting in the first place?

What homework?

Do you mean treaties, international agreements etc?

Well, all of the above are proven useless and most importantly outdated.

Now is the time to do this (if the solution is found). These remnants of the colonial era must clear off. Our guarantees can come directly from Europe.

After all, land in Cyprus is a precious commodity.

I don't know Oracle, I am just guessing.
What's your take on this?

So, you are "guessing" that the TCs did/do need protecting. If not by the Brits, then by the Turks!

I need verification on that before proceeding.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Verification...

Well, during the 1974 invasion, I believe a British commander negotiated a truce and some peace keeping was implemented by the Brits. England, as a guarantor, assumed the responsibility of "protecting" both communities from attacking each other. The TCs, being a minority, may need the protection...

The fact that the bases are still here leads me to believe that this is the reason why.

Correct me if I am wrong. My memory is not what it used to be.

So, you are asserting that the whole reason why we have TWO Sovereign Bases in the free area is to protect TCs ? ... and that was the preemptive reason for including them in the Constitution? :?

Therefore, you are accusing the UK of expecting the "abuse" of a minority, before the ink had even dried on the paper!
