HSBC and the UK Financial Services Authority

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Gasman » Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:55 pm

You've lost me now. What's all the stuff about 'correct terminology'? Does this refer to them not putting TRNC as "TRNC" or what?

You said early on:

I also expect the Central Bank of Cyprus to be interested in the response from the FSA.

Were they?

It's been so long since you first wrote about it, I've lost the plot.

Meanwhile (just looking back over this thread) I never did get any further replies to my emails re the ITV Travel Show recommending GC owned Hotel holidays in TRNC.

B25 said:

Gasman, let me have the email address you wrote and I'll send something too. As for HSBC, the're gonna be getting a stiff one too.

Cheers

Did she/he ever get a reply?

And B25 also said:

After HSBC, its going to be the next big name, Vodafone springs to mind.

Any update on that?

I thought of this thread recently, if it is a big no no to recognise TRNC at all, why are they allowed to have TRNC Tourism/Public Information offices and a TRNC Consulate in London, US (and elsewhere)?

London Office of the Representative, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
Address: 29 Bedford Square WCI London
Telephone: 00-44-171-6311920
Fax: 00-44-171-6311948

Brits can use these to get official documents relating to TRNC stamped and verified, for instance Power of Attorney relating to house purchases, applications for licences for non TRNC citizens to marry in the TRNC etc.

As for Tourism offices - surely they are CLEARLY in existence to encourage 'trade' with the TRNC?

This stuff is merely obfuscation on behalf of the Minister. This was never an issue of correct terminology - although the FSA's sloppiness enabled me to go for the jugular. The issue is to do with the FSA regulating HSBC's activities in the north on a consolidated basis.

I can't confirm, as they didn't do me the courtesy of responding, when I passed all the information to them.

Indeed, which, in the UK, is in clear breach of its treaty obligations to Cyprus, and ought to be challenged by the Cypriot government. Perhaps after the reunification talks come to nought.

Have you ever bothered to ask the correct authorities of the RoC their opinion this issue whıch bothers you so much; or even the Central Bank of Cyprus. The HSBC might even have their blessing for all we know.

Do you know anyone there who'd be responsive? I've found them to be as useless as the UK FSA so far.

Would it puzzle you to know that there might be money to be made, providing financial services to thousands of UK expats, who have 'bought' property there? Would it puzzle you to know that an unscrupulous bank like the HSBC (aren't they all?) might risk providing such financial services, if there was a good chance it could get away with it?

Dont be so patronising. Ofcourse there is money to be made. There are branches of the Turk Bankasi in London, isnt there?

It must be like the car dealerships in the north. There must be some sort of recognition which sees no boundaries - you tell me; you are the know-all.

If you think I'm being patronising it's probably because I think you're being obtuse.

The world economic crisis has been caused by the unscrupulous activities of unregulated financial institutions; that recognise no boundaries other than the pursuit of profit. If they can get away with it, they will. And, up till now, they have been allowed to get away with it. Likewise in the north, and including car dealerships.
