Cycling

Postby glenice.hardwicke » Sat Feb 13, 2010 10:40 pm

Hello everyone, am looking for some info for friends visiting Cyprus in March. They are staying in Oroklini and are keen cyclists. Does anyone know if there is any cycle hire available in Larnaca or thereabouts

Re Palio. they want the non-motorised variety.

Somebody please tell them it is bad enough on 4 wheels, using 2 wheels in Cyprus is suicidal!

Cycling!!

Postby glenice.hardwicke » Sun Feb 14, 2010 2:39 pm

I did mean the non-motorised variety that's why I said cyclists. Was quite pleased when I saw there were 3 replies but not so when I found they were no help at all. As a new member was hoping for a bit of help. If anyone has a serious response would be glad to hear from you

Glenice

As a keen cyclist myself I will say that cycling is potentially hazardous here. You will see very few cyclists on the road and they are usually foreigners.

Cypriot motorists in general do no appear to recognise cyclists as legitimate road users and so tell your friends to beware!

This link is to a web-site run by Brits who live in Cyprus and are keen cyclists themselves. Besides some general info there is a section on cycling which be useful.

Hope it helps.

Oh my lord! Cypriots have forgotten the days when the bicycle was the MAIN means of transport and the profession of podilatas (bike mechanic) was more prvalent than that of the developer today. Major Cypriot fortunes were built on bicycle imports, like those of Ouzounian Soultanian, the importers of Raleigh bikes. Today we hear the semi racist comment that only Indians ride bikes.

The contempt for bicycles and the derision remind me of a conversation in the UK. I used the word "vizaka", noticing that there were no "vizatzies" in England. A recent arrival from Cyprus, Georgie, asked "what is a vizaka?".

My friend V. replied in an angry tone "it is the kind of rock you used in the village to wipe your ass".

So SUV users of Cyprus, remember that your father rode a bike to and from school and work every day and he felt lucky, because the other alternative was his feet or the family donkey. And also remember that the prime ministers of some very wealthy countries in Europe ride bikes to work, probably because they are rich enough and dont have to fool anyone by driving a two ton metal box.
