i thought the turkish based usa nukes were removed during the cuba missile crissis.

the big question re usa 74 involvment is did usa instgate the coup, in order to give turkey a reason to invade?

Gabaston, the nukes that were removed after the missile crisis were virtually obsolete anyway. It was Kennedy's masterstroke, the Soviets were installing state of the art nukes in Cuba and Kennedy exchanged a bunch of obsolete missiles in Turkey for them - systems which were rapidly replaced with more up-to-date models.

Mills also missed an important point about the Cyprus crisis. At that time the US Presidency was in utter turmoil with the watergate scandal in full swing. Effectively, the ultra-realist Kissinger was in total control of US foreign policy in July 1974 and was making decisions on his personal judgement rather than through the Nixon cabinet. Unsurprising therefore that his desire to oust the 'Red Monk' as Makarios was known in Washington, exhibited itself as it did. Reminds me of the murder of Thomas a Becket in English history. A group of knights heard King Henry II cry out, 'Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest', whereupon they went and murdered the Archibishop of Canterbury. Quite a close analogy with 1974 Cyprus.

One that they didn't instigate was the genuinely popular revolution in Iran against the US-supported Shah who had systematically robbed his country of its wealth for decades and suppressed his people using US made weapons systems. They then seemed mystified why the Iranians held US embassy workers as hostages... it was the same in Chile before that when they helped in the coup by the adorable General Pinochet (who went on to carry out huge purges of supposed Communists, killing tens of thousands of people) and the assassination of Salvador Allende, another popularly-elected leader.

The US has a lot of crimes to attone for in the future.

ye fat chance. the usa are too big for anybody to take them on. only the EU could go head to head with the USA but GWB's lap dog would not let it. Plus USA would win anyway

I guess in Cyprus Problem everybody is guilty but the one who actually pulled the trigger.

Like you said Turkey knew from 1959 that in 1963 there would be uprising in Cyprus, thats why she sent a whole ship with guns and ammunition secretely in Cyprus in 1959! Ridiculous. The TCs were killed partly because Turkey wanted them to get killed. How else could she concentrate them, how else could she materialise her plans for partition.

Not to stoke the flames, but let's not forget that if Turkey did not have initial goals to maintain a foot hold on Cyprus, the invasion would never have happened in the first place.

The Turk Mukavemet Teskilati was founded and backed by successive Turkish governments from the early 1950's, many leading figure heads of the Turkish Cypriot community who saw the organisations divisive goal and spoke up against it were killed. Fazil Ondur, the chief editor of the weekly newspaper Inkilapci, Ahmet Yahaya, a committee member of the Turkish Cypriot Athletic and Culture centre, Kutlu Adali, the Turkish Cypriot journalist to name but a few. The details are out there if anyone want's to find them.

Cyprus in continually used and seen as an issue of national pride within Turkey, any withdrawal will not come easily.

I think as a community both sides need to consider the real motives behind all that has happened, and how to move forward.

What a load of propaganda! The TC 'revolted' in 63? Get lost! There was on party for whom the 60 agreements - though signed - were unacceptable (except as a stepping stone to a hidden ulterior motive) and that was the GC. For TC and T the 60's agreements were a victory and if the GC had not planned and actioned the purposful destrction of these agreements but actualy implemented both the spirit and letter of the agreements they made there would have been no TC 'revolt' (what a propaganda lie to call it a revolt / uprising!). If your post was all I knew of Cyprus then one would think that it was TC and T (alone) that plotted and actioned the destruction of the 60's agreements and GC did not. Now that is ridiculous.
