Minister of State/ Europe Mr Bryant: the division of Cyprus

[quote]Cyprus - Minister of State for Europe Mr Chris Bryant: the division of Cyprus is tragic and unacceptable

The British Minister of State for Europe Mr Chris Bryant described the division of Cyprus as “tragic and unacceptable” and asked for an end to it. Speaking at a working dinner, on Wednesday 3 February, organised by the Secretariat of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, Mr Bryant called on the two sides in Cyprus to work to bring “catharsis” and to intensify their efforts at the ongoing talks in order to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem that will bring peace and prosperity to all Cypriots in a reunited Cyprus.

He called on the Cypriot people to look forward to the future and not to the past, and stressed that the solution must be found by the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, without foreign interventions and influence. At the same time he acknowledged the important role and the great influence of Turkey and said that Turkey must reinforce the talks with positive and practical measures. He stressed characteristically that the Turkish side must make concessions, implement and not simply speak about confidence building measures so that real progress can be made. Referring to the Limnitis crossing point he said that it must be opened without further delay.

Mr Bryant stressed that Britain supports and encourages the talks, which with patience and courage the two leaders of Cyprus have been conducting for 18 months to reunite Cyprus and is ready to assist for the success of the talks.

The Ankara Protocol must be implemented and this is something that he stresses to his interlocutors when he visits Turkey, just as Prime Minister Gordon Brown does to Mr Erdogan and Minister of State David Miliband to his counterpart Mr Davutoglu, he said.

In his introductory speech the President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK Mr Peter Droussiotis welcomed the personal interest of the British Prime Minister Mr Gordon Brown in the Cyprus problem as well as Mr Bryant’s active involvement and requested that the Prime Minister’s statements and the Memorandum of Understanding signed between President Christofias and the British Premier last June, be implemented. He underlined that Turkey places obstacles at the talks, ignores the international law, violates human rights and that Britain, the European Union and the international community must exercise real pressure on Turkey to work for the solution of the Cyprus problem in the framework of the United Nations resolutions and the principles of the EU.

Concluding Mr Droussiotis said that the Cypriots in the UK, as British voters, are asking a simple question: What will Britain, which has so many and long standing ties, interests as well as obligations to Cyprus, do to force Turkey to support a solution in Cyprus based on the principles of a federal state, with one international personality, one citizenship and one sovereignty. The Cypriot and British citizens need reassurances that the UK Government will really put pressure on Turkey because it holds the key to the solution of the Cyprus problem, he added.

More questions followed and a very constructive discussion was carried out, in a friendly atmosphere, on many aspects of the Cyprus problem.[/quote

Chris Bryant stresses the problem is one for the Cypriot people 'without foreign interventions and influence', and acknowledges 'the important role and the great influence of Turkey' (but doesn't mention Greece, nor the UK).

The whole of the last two paragraphs of the quote are what the Cypriot President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK Mr Peter Droussiotis said, not what the British Minister of State for Europe Mr Chris Bryant said. Bryant makes no mention of 'United Nations resolutions and the principles of the EU'.

Droussiotis seems to be insisting on intervention and pressure from the UK, Bryant seems to be stressing that there should be none?

When insisting on protocols and commitments to enforce, how about the promise by the EU to open north cyprus to trade and funding.

Sounds like pick and choose the resolutions/promises/commitments etc. you want depending on your alliances.

You’re thinking of Gunter Verheugen’s foolish and unauthorized promises he was making to gain popularity, so it’s by no accident that the EU quickly got rid of him not too long after that because the EU doesn’t work with “promises” but agreements in writing.

You know the one that stood up in the EU and cried…

“The RoC tricked us into believing that the AP would be approved!”

…thereby exposing the Anglo-American plan of a pre-determined “democratic” referendum!!!

A promise is a promise but unfortunately they turned out to be like you, a bit of a let down.

Go find Gunter and ask him why he was making promises without the EU's approval and slap him, and then go find Donktosh and ask him why he believed in "promises" despite 40 years in the political scene and slap him too.

Problem solved!

We have had this discussion before, along with the claims that the EU made no written commitments to the TC community following the GC no vote to Annan plan along with the proof and actual text of the exact commitments made, yet still we have these 'no comitments were made, just vague promisses from people not authorised to make them'.

This is just simply not true.

The commitments made by the EU at

From the 2576th EU Council meeting in Luxembourg, 26 April 2004

a direct primary source for what was agreed is here

http://ue.eu.int/ueDocs/cms_Data/docs/p ... /80142.pdf

it includes

The Council is determined to put an end to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot communityand to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of theTurkish Cypriot community. The Council invited the Commission to bring forward comprehensive proposals to this end, with particular emphasis on the economic integration of the island and on improving contact between the two communities and with the EU.

This then is the written commitment made to the TC community, made by the highest policy setting body of the European Union, the European Council, signed and agreed by all those in attendance including Mr George IACOVOU Minister for Foreign Affairs for RoC.

This has all be laid out here before yet STILL we hear the refrains of

'I am not aware of any written commitment'

'comittments were made by one indivdual without authority to do so'

and such rubbish.

Commitments were made. In writing. Agreed at the highest level of policy setting within the EU. You can and will argue till the cows come home as to what those comittments mean and if they have been met or not and if not why, but you can not argue that they were not made. Its there in black and white from a primary source and has been presented here many times alreay over many years.
