E.O.K.A Greek Cypriot freedom fighers VS TMT

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Piratis » Wed Feb 10, 2010 3:33 pm

not everyone was a pro enosis...

Boomerang, the majority of Cypriots was pro-enosis. This was the case since 1821 when all Greeks first revolted seeking their free Greek State. Since that time Cypriots wanted to be part of this free Greek state along with the Athenians, the Cretans and all other Greeks in all other Greek territories and islands under Ottoman occupation.

Accepting not to be part of this Greek state was a compromise from our rights. However we were (and still are) willing to compromise for a true independence, and not the joke of "independence" the foreign Imperialists forced on us.

While both enosis and a true independence would achieve the aim of liberating Cyprus, union with the rest of Greece would offer more security to us, which is why it was the preferred choice between the two.

It is for the same reason we joined the EU. By joining the EU we placed the EU laws higher than our local laws and we gave the right to people from UK, Germany, France etc to take decisions that affect our island. However the advantages of uniting with EU far outweigh the disadvantages, which is why uniting with EU is a good thing for us all things considered.

If being a separate republic had only advantages, then we would still be in the era of city states. There wouldn't even be a need for Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos etc to be in the same Republic.

Boomer the objective of this revisionsit history is clear.

It seeks to paint a picture that says that TC had no real reason to fear enosis rather than independance was the objective of the GC community and in fact just used this an 'excuse' when in reality there was nothing to fear and they knew there was nothing to fear.

This is just plain and simple nonsense. It is beyond any doubt that if there had been no call for, desire for and pursuit of enosis in Cyprus by GC and instead only for indpendance of Cyprus, then the history of Cyprus from 1960 to today would be massively different. This is a reality that the revionists seek to deny.

As Makarios is claimed to have said in 1977 in an interview given to the Norweigan newspaper Degbladet

It is in the name of Enosis that Cyprus has been destroyed

Denying the role that enosis rather than indepedance played in what happened in Cyprus does nothing to increase our understanding and much to harm realistic prospects of finding ways out of the mess we are in today.

They only pick the parts of history which suit them, and bugger the rest...
They forget there was a referandum in 1950,Church organised and supported, which overwhelmingly voted for Enosis with Greece...5 years later in 1955 EOKA started their armed campaign to get rid of the British...and achieve what???? what did they want to replace the British with??? An independent Cyprus Republic???

No they wanted to achieve Enosis with Greece...anyone who denies this is a big historical revisionist fool and does not deserve a response.... 8)

Bir, I have long ago come to the same conclusion, but I can't help myself. I am trapped into sniping at him. If only a had a rifle?

But here's something for YOU to explain...

It is simple GR!...Those TCs were most probably members or sympathisers of AKEL...Akel was supporting the Enosis push at the time arguing that communism would triumph in Greece and Cyprus would become part of the great Communist Utopia....

Thanks for TC theory #1. I'll now wait for Erol's too and then give the most entertaining one a prize! :D

Erol, it was your choice to come to an island with a Greek population. When you were first occupying Cyprus and all other Greek territories and islands and transfering your settlers here you probably thought that the Greeks would never be free and that you would be exploiting us forever.

This was your mistake. Otherwise you would have realized that the Greeks would one day form their own Greek state which would include all Greek territories (and not 10000 separate small states) and that you would have to live in this Greek state as an ethnic minority.

I am still waiting from you (or anybody else) to tell me what was the difference between Cyprus and any other Greek island or territory.

The struggle was a noble one the goal was wrong. The T/Cs would perhaps have struggled alongside us if the struggle was for independence , alas the ultimate dream was flawed .

F**k me!
Something me and milti do agree on. :D

i disagre with both pirayis and erol on the enosis thingie...

my question is this...

Piratis...if enosis was wanted that much by the majority we would have had it...i believe cyprus was offered to greece at some stage and greece refused it...could be wrong...

Erol...if enosis was the desire there is nothing the tcs could have done if the 80% of the populaton thought the tcs were in the way...even during british rule...

Makarios said that and its true...it doesn't mean the whole population wanted enosis...

as I said earlier the hard asses were a minority...a ruthless minority...my first cousin was eoka b...he visited OZ a couple of years ago...a simple man, involved in the 74 coup...a pro enosis...a villager...i asked him questions,..he said brainwashing...

my own family never accepted enosis...

The British didn't offer Cyprus without asking for something in return.

What should have happened is what we had asked to happen and it was denied to us. A referendum where the Cypriot people could democratically decide the destiny of their own island, either this was enosis or independence. If such a referendum was allowed then there wouldn't be even a need for EOKA or an armed struggle.

Personally I would accept the democratic decision of the Cypriot people whatever that was, as long as the referendum included all legitimate options so the Cypriots could freely express their will. Do we agree on this?

The most compelling evidence that Enosis (with Greece) was not as popular as some make it seem was seen during the Greek coup on the 15th of July 1974.

The country was fairly equally divided between the “Makarionites” (pro independence) and the Greek nationalists (EOKA B). The two forces were fairly equally balanced numerically but the latter won the 4-5 day battles because they had superior weapons from their NG support, but their number of casualties were also remarkably equivalent!

* Where I've said "casualties", make that fatalities.

I would've thought the answer is obvious,Piratis...All the others didn't have a choice...We did...And we took it,and Cyprus today is an independent Republic,of sorts, given that one of the founding partners is missing!
