Why they are rare these days.

My father told me of a story he heard from his grandfather. My great-great grand father had to arrange the christening of his 13th child he planned on slaughtering a gigantic pig specially raised for the occasion. The pig was stolen a few days before. Nobody else in the village wanted to sell their pig. My great great grandfather did not know what to do so he went for a walk down to the sea near Agios Amvrosios(occupied areas). Where he observed "enan paraxeno xtinwn" (a weird beast) Eishen moutsounan san thn katsellan- ma den eishen pothia. eishen nouron san to psari" ( It had the face of a cow but the tail of a fish.) He ran home and returned with his knife and the butchered the beast, fire up the old fashioned wood fire pizza oven and he made seal kleftiko. Hot blubber erupted out of the oven and flooded his yard and the yards of many neighbors. The guests licked their plates and fingers and wanted more. This was the best pig they ever ate!

Those who say the monk seal is a "fragile" or endangered species managed to wangle a whole pile of cash out of the EU inorder to "save" the seals. Hope the same scheme is not being planned in Cyprus. The Monk Seal is alive and well all over the Med, the only place it is facing problems is in the west, where the French and Spanish have overused the enivironment, but the schemes to save the seal are more prevalent in the east Med. That should tell us something about the situation.

Cypriots do not eat human flesh these days. You have to go to PNG if you want to eat "long pig".
