Sometimes wonder about the significance of fruit and veg to our little problem.
Certainly undeniable that CYs have this remarkably rare association and affinity with the old villages. Often it is the agricultural produce of the old villages that defines the character of these villages. Naturally what is most profitably grown, the choice of crop, will be determined by the water, its quality and available quantity and by the nature of the soil in the district.
Now some years ago, soon after the checkpoints were opened (sure all will know the story) Our Beloved Brother Apostolides was minded to visit his lands in Occupied Lapithos, and we all know that Lapithos has an island-wide reputation for its Lemons. Mr A was keen to see his family's Lemon Groves. Perhaps to take a couple back to the Free Areas to show friends and family; and to squeeze them over his Souvla. Wouldn't that have been, to Mr A's taste, the best ever souvla?
All will know the rest of Mr A's story, but isn't it in essence an illustration of the huge power of attraction to the old villages and their distinct fruit or veg as well of course to the irresistible draw, even after all these years, of the ancestral lands?
To make the point further, and to look at InBreeding, and hope he/she doesn't mind being used as an example, take our DT with his orange groves in Occupied Morphou or you could consider my good self, who has only ever spent two hours out of, not telling you scabby lot years, life in his/her old villages, yet who still has a ridiculous interest in Apricots, from the old village some of the scammier amongst you know as Esentepe! ... or a fondness for Kolokasi and Tobacco, the principle crops from the other old village up near the top end of the Karpas.
Inbreeding? oh alright then .... in old days of course much of the available gene pool was the village, or perhaps, the nearer neighbouring villages. Now leaving aside relis from the old villages, sometimes meet unrelated fellow villagers, or see vids, or photos, and so often see clear village genetic traits.
Now you try explaining all the above and more (if of course it has any credence) to the CarpetBaggers; and to those who go on and on about compensation, or those who say people won't want to return in any numbers.
Think the power of oranges and lemons is so underestimated by some sometimes .... anyone for an apricot?
