Greece is a serious military liability that should be avoided at all costs… akin to Germany’s Italy in WWII!

Well then, if Greece is not a threat, then why don't you invade a Greek island or 2 so that we can see how good you are against a nation that is armed to its teeth? Go On!

99 Turkey $ 11,200 2009 est.

If Greece is bankrupt, then what does that make Turkey?Image

You don't watch any international news channels in south cyprus? Greece is making headlines for nearly 2 months for manipulating economic figures and they are in deep crisis. By the way Türkiye is world's 16th biggest economy and last time I checked Greece was not among the top 15.
I voted NAI for Greek bases in south cyprus. After all, Cyprus is a Turko-Greek island. They have every right to be there. Long live Turkish-Greek brotherhood.

If Turkey is the 16th biggest economy, only due to the fact it is a large market of some 70 million people, then why is Turkey's GDP per capita only 1/3 of Greece's?

If it were not for the fact that Turkey is occupying Cyprus illegally, then we may have started a charity fund raising for Turkey on this forum, to help feed a a few starving Turks!

Why don't you withdraw from Cyprus so that we can send you some urgently needed food and blankets?

Being a big economy is not just about having a large market. But of course what would a south cypriot know about it?

Mama Greece has no industry. You can only market your sun,sea and sand. Even in that one you've fallen behind. I remember Greece having a bigger tourism industry in 90s. 2009 figures say Türkiye attracts 26 million tourists and Greece only 16 m. Export your south cypriot donkeys to Greece and let's all pray for bankrupt(and corrupt) Greece to improve. 8)

Do a bit of research and you will see that both Greece and Cyprus leave Turkey for dead as they are far wealthier with a far greater GDP per capita.

Let me make it easy for you!

You'd want to live in a place that resembles the TRNC? With Army bases and armed soldiers visible everywhere? Where you cannot drive far without coming up against intimidating 'Forbidden Territory' signs?

I wouldn't.

The impression I get is that RoC keeps their military blended in with the countryside and not 'in your face'. But that the TRNC do just the opposite.

They have huge army camps butting up against and almost adjoining hotels and holiday complexes over there and they way they 'decorate' them makes it impossible for you not to notice them.

Gasman, I am asking you for your thoughts.

Another thing I don't want to see is a permanent status quo or partition, but that's what we have until something changes.....

You got my thoughts. You said you would have thought, that Greece should be obligated to station 40,000 to 50,000 troops on Cyprus.

I said I wouldn't like that.

Thank you Gasman!

You were also asking whether I would like to see a militarised Cyprus. The obvious answer is that I don't, nor do I want to see some escalation in Cyprus.

But on the other hand, Cyprus is also under occupation. Whilst I wouldn't like to see a militarised Cyprus, we so easily forget the fact that Turkey is at present playing us like fools, and if history is anything to go by, they will not abandon their ill gotten gains and stranglehold of Cyprus.

If current negotiations are anything to go by, and the impending failure bought about by Turkey's maximalist claims as a result of discussions taking place on a slanted table in Turkey's favour, then what other options do we have?

A bit off topic I know, but under the Zurich agreement what was the number of Greek and Turkish troops allowed to be based on Cyprus?

Perhaps I am wrong, but Greece maintains an air base in Paphos. In fact that is mainly why Paphos airport exists at all.

Yes, Greece is in serious financial trouble but don't underestimate her. Greece has the largest shipping fleet in the world. Greece is a major player in the Balkans in trade. Tourism is becoming less important as is agriculture.

The problem in Greece is the endemic corruption and tax evasion. The black economy forms a significant part of the overall economy and I would imagine if this is brought into the real economy then the situation in Greece will improve. Greeks will need to make some painful adjustments, starting with paying their taxes properly! It is estimated that up to 30billion euros is lost just through income tax evasion! So I think if Greece sorts out these problems she will be in a very good financial position fairly quickly.

1,100 Greek Troops and 700 Turkish troops I believe.

Greece still maintains it's obligatory 1,100 troops on Cyprus, whereas Turkey has 40,000 troops.

My thinking is that Greece should either deploy 40,000 troops on Cyprus to match Turkey, and if not, then they should withdraw the 1,100 troops already in Cyprus so that the RoC can more effectively argue that the Treaty of Guarantee and Alliance is well and truly defunct.

Going back to the real topic of the thread, let mama Greece open all types of bases in south cyprus. Türkiye is capable of getting 100% of Cyprus in 2 hours, Salonika in 4 and Athens in 24.
