legal issue

Postby jonfrost » Wed Feb 03, 2010 5:08 pm

I was stopped for drink driving my sample was 33mg, the limit is 22mg. The police told me i must wait for a court summons. Can you tell me:
1.Do I need a lawyer at the court to represent me? (I cannot speak greek).
2.What fine should I expect?
3.Do I get points on my license?(english/eu type).
4.How long will this take?
5.Is there anything else I need to know?

Frustrated because I didnt know the limit was so low(I know that is my fault) and if in uk would have passed as the limit is 35mg.
Many thanks

did you tell them you did not know the limit and in the uk its higher?

just tell them at the court you dont speak greek and you dont need a lawyer you just pleed guilty and the judge will give you a fine maybe 1000 max depending on the mood of the judge. in cyprus they cant put points on your license so your ok there. whenever they can see you.. could be weeks/months/days you should let them know you are leaving for england maybe they will rush it for you.

1.Do I need a lawyer at the court to represent me? (I cannot speak greek).

There is a special police branch (I forget what it’s called) where all the pending traffic court cases are kept, so you should go there and tell them that you’d like to admit guilt so as not to go to court and they’ll get you to sign at the back of the paper work etc. Add an excuse in English like “I apologise, but I haven’t been myself lately due to personal problems.” and that may encourage the judge to reduce your fine a bit! :)

If you're in Nicosia let me know and I'll give you directions to this place!

2.What fine should I expect?

I predict between €200..500.

3.Do I get points on my license?(english/eu type).

I predict 3 points.

4.How long will this take?

Between 2-3 months.

Good luck.

Were you stopped because you were incapable of driving or a random check - or some other traffic regulation infringement...?

I was breathalysed after driving 55 in a 50 limit... I can't help but think it was more to do with revenue generation than traffic safety...
