I was breathalysed after driving 55 in a 50 limit... I can't help but think it was more to do with revenue generation than traffic safety...

I think you’re just a drunken hooligan with a criminal drunk-driving history trying to justify himself! Shame on you!

I’ve even heard that you drive around with an ice bucket on your head!

You can put forward some extenuating circumstances like, I am a member of Cyprus Forum etc...

If the Court is aware in advance that you cannot speak Greek, they will provide you with an interpretor, although the rseult is very confusing, as the interpretation is not always good and things get out of sequence.
(I once witnessed, a group of Bangledeshis, for who Greek was translated into English, before a further interpretor translated into Banga!).

Fines are normally paid on the spot; no cheques - cash only.

No, much to the disappointment of the officer I blew zero.

It was clearly an exercise in revenue generation - nothing to do with road safety....

If you believe the propaganda that having even a tiny amount of alcohol in your blood makes you a killer then I suppose it does...

If you believe in personal liberty and taking responsibility for your own actions then no, I don't suppose it does.

I agree it is for revenue, but they are realy clamping down on drunk drivers at the moment. Last year there were a few cases of pedestrains being killed by drunk drivers, so obviously they are on the look out now. As for court case, it takes a long time for the date to come up. My husband got to 13 points i think, and they took him to court, took his lisence away for two weeks and we paid a fine of about 500 EUR, but we waited for at least 7 months for it to go to court. Dont need a lawyer. At the end of the day, they might not like you pointing it out to them, but English is one of the official languages of Cyprus, so the judge has to be able to speak to you.
