The UN Chief arrived in Cyprus last night for a three day visit – which is the first to be paid to the island by him.
Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his arrival, Mr Ban said he is visiting the island to show his personal support to the efforts being waged by the two leaders towards bringing a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
Stressing that the expectations of the international community are very high, he said ``Let`s not underestimate the importance of a solution not only to Cyprus but also to the region and indeed to the world. Solving the Cyprus problem will give an inspiration to all those around the world trying to solve other seemingly intractable conflicts`.
Ban said he is visiting the island to encourage the two leaders to bring the talks they have been continuing to a successful conclusion.
``So I am on no illusion that the Cyprus problem is easy to solve or about the difficulties that you face. At the same time, I am confident that a solution is possible and within reach``, he said.
In a call to the two people on the island, the UN Chief said `Your destiny is in your hands`.
