This news is from UN web page ..... New2 does not bother with titles as our friend DT moaning all the time .Important is how both side leaders are willing to solve the problem. Have a look ladies and gentelmen.....

MR and MR...............

1 February 2010 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon – who as a citizen of the Republic of Korea understands the “emptiness” of a country divided into north and south – voiced optimism today that a solution to long-running problems in Cyprus is “within reach,” calling for the leaders of the two communities on the Mediterranean island to step up their efforts.
“I sincerely hope that the current Cypriot-led talks will bear a mutually acceptable solution as soon as possible,” Mr. Ban said at the inauguration ceremony for the Ledra-Lokmaci Street stabilization work in the capital, Nicosia.

The crossing was opened in April 2008 following and agreement by Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, which the Secretary-General hailed at the time as “positive step forward.”

Also that year, the two men committed to establishing a federal government with a single international personality, along with a Turkish Cypriot Constituent State and a Greek Cypriot Constituent State, each of equal status.

Today, Mr. Ban welcomed the second phase of stabilization work at the crossing, which has become “the symbol of the two leaders to heal divisions and to work together towards a common future.”

He stressed that thought it may be difficult, a solution is within reach, calling on Mr. Christofias and Mr. Talat to accelerate their work so that “the people of Cyprus can enjoy a genuinely free and democratic and prosperous life.”

The Secretary-General arrived yesterday in the country, his first-ever visit to Cyprus, to show his support for United Nations-backed talks – which are “Cypriot-led, Cypriot-owned” – on the island.

From his own experience as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, “I have seen for myself the very sad reality, the emptiness and destruction and such very painful feelings I share with the people of Cyprus,” he said.

During his three-day visit to Cyprus, Mr. Ban is slated to hold discussions with Alexander Downer, his Special Adviser for Cyprus, as well as with Mr. Christofias and Mr. Talat.
In December, the Security Council extended by six months the mandate UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which was set up in 1964 to prevent further fighting between the communities. After hostilities erupted again in 1974, its responsibilities were expanded to supervise ceasefire lines, maintain a buffer zone and undertake humanitarian activities.

I bet most of U watch live transmissios from your own televisions, u all heard what UN general secretary said and what messages he has given ... no need to play games..... with us whole world listen and watched as well.

Really Halil, really??? "How happy both of them..., Halil?" And I suppose now that Talat and Ban entered the "TRNC Presidential Palace," you think that the "TRNC" has also been recognized! To post the photo here, that is what you probably wish to suggest, isn't it Halil? What a bunch of suckers most of you (TCs) are indeed!

I did not say that TRNC is recognized . Yes they were happy because they were talking same language . How they are supporting the peace talks. All blackmailing over secratary and Talat did not bother them at all .There was agreat support them from TC public. thats why tey were very happy.

God you Gcs are so uptight, of course its not recognition but for the UN Secretary General to come to the TRNC and attend a meeting at the Presential Palace is a sign of how things will gradually develop, 5 years ago this was unthinkable but not it happens who knows what will happen in 10 years time without a solution in sight. You can continue to bury your heads in the sand but like it or not things will change for the TRNC and it wont make the GCs happy, man did you see your leaders face at the press conference??

Cyprus, 1 February 2010 - Remarks by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at inauguration ceremony for the Ledra-Lokmaci Street stabilization work

http://www.un.org/apps/sg/offthecuff.asp

SG: It's a great honour for me as Secretary-General of the United Nations to be here crossing almost two years after it was opened by the two leaders in April 2008. I welcome the second phase of the Ledra Street/Lokmaci crossing stabilization work. I am pleased after a long interval the work on the façade of the buildings can continue. I look forward to the day when the whole area will be opened and restored so that inhabitants of Nicosia can again enjoy this area as a busy centre of daily life. This crossing has become the symbol of the two leaders to heal divisions and to work together towards a common future.

My personal reflection as a citizen of Korea, I am coming from a country where it is still divided between the south and north, I have seen for myself the very sad reality, the emptiness and destructions and such very painful feelings I share with the people of Cyprus.

I sincerely hope that the current Cypriot-led talks will bear a mutually acceptable solution as soon as possible. I am convinced that though it may be very difficult the solution is possible. It is within reach and I urge the leaders of the two communities to redouble their efforts, so that the people of Cyprus can enjoy genuinely free and democratic and prosperous life.

I am here to show my solidarity, my support to these ongoing talks led by the Cypriots and this is a Cypriot-led, Cypriot owned. The United Nations will continue to support your efforts.

Taking this opportunity I would like to thank the bicommunal initiative of the Nicosia master plan for preparing and executing this project. I would also like to particularly thank the advisers of the two leaders Mr. Nami and Mr. Iacovou, the heads of the two municipalities Mrs. Eleni Mavrou and Mr. Cemal Bulutoglulari the UNDP partnership for Future Programme for implementing and coordinating this programme and last but not least the European Union represented this morning by Mr. Leopold Maurer, the representative of President Barroso of the European Commission for funding this project

Again thank you very much and I wish you all the best for reunifying the country and a reunified Cyprus.

Thank you very much.

Yes Eroğlu said as well `BAN IS IN CYPRUS TO GIVE MESSAGES`

have a look how he got the message .............

Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu has said that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is visiting Cyprus to learn the realities on the two sides and to give some messages, adding that the visit is not an outside intervention in the Cyprus problem. The Premier said that the UN Chief has given the message that the Cyprus question is a problem between the two sides and that it can only be solved by them.

Mr Eroglu described the UN Chief’s visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the lunch Mr Ban at the Presidential Palace as positive moves.

Referring to the statement issued by the United Nations Secretary General during the lunch at the Presidential Palace, Mr Eroglu said it is pleasing that Ban’s speech included views that the Cyprus problem can only be solved by those living in Cyprus.

`He gave us the message that the problem is concerning us. The future is in our hands and that he didn’t bring outside proposals` the Premier said.

Asked to comment on Mr Ban’s referral to the current talks as a last opportunity in Cyprus, Mr Eroglu said `such statements are always issued but intention is the important thing`.

He underlined the need for the Greek Cypriot Side to sit at the negotiation table with good will and with the aim of bringing an agreement to the Cyprus problem.

`The Greek Cypriot Side has been sitting at the table, but it has no intention of reaching an agreement`, Mr Eroglu said, complaining that the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias maintains an intransigent attitude at the talks.

He noted that the Turkish Side’s expectation from the Greek Cypriot Administration is to sit at the table with good will accepting the existence of two politically equal sides on the island.

Joint statement of the two leaders at the end of their meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

WE, AS THE two leaders, express our gratitude for the visit of the United Nations Secretary General to Cyprus, which demonstrates the continued interest of the United Nations and the international community for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem under the Secretary General’s Good Offices Mission.
Taking this opportunity, we express our appreciation to the Secretary General for his Good Offices Mission as approved by the Security Council and for the efforts aimed at finding a mutually agreed solution.
Working groups comprising Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have devoted time and effort to thoroughly discuss all aspects of the Cyprus problem.
We ourselves, together with our Advisors and our teams, have been working diligently for more than a year on all Chapters of the Cyprus problem. We have worked on the basis of the integrated whole approach that is “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed”. Good convergence has already been achieved in some Chapters. For the rest, we are determined to work hard to achieve the desired progress.
Over the last three weeks we have worked hard during our intensified negotiations, mainly on the Chapter of Governance and Power Sharing and achieved important progress.
We express our strong commitment to continue to work on this and the rest of the Chapters. We express our confidence that with good will and determination, we can achieve a solution in the shortest possible time.
It is our common conviction that the Cyprus problem has remained unresolved for too long. We are also aware that time is not on the side of settlement.
There is an important opportunity now to find a solution to the Cyprus problem which would take into full consideration the legitimate rights and concerns of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. We are aware that such a settlement is in the interest of all and that it will finally bring peace, stability and prosperity to our common home Cyprus."
