Apostolos Andreas Monastery, Karpaz

As this is one of the pilgrimage centres of the Greek Orthodox Church, I thought some of you (who may never have been there) might like to see some photos of the interior that I took last year. There were quite a lot of GCs visiting at the time.

I was intrigued by the religious mementos depicting one leg. Does anyone know what that's all about?

Tacky Turkish stalls right outside (bit like bringing Vorokline Sun. Market to Karpaz) The Monastery had more visitors than the stalls had customers.

Mrs C and I went three or four years ago. Didn't see the one legged artifacts but in other churches it is usual for the afflicted perhaps with a dodgy limb to take a wax cast for blessing in the hope of a recovery. Some connection?

Two things did strike me about the Monastery, one was of course the poor state of repair, and the other, the large number of ill-matching and unlit chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Can only imagine they had been salvaged from other churches and brought there for safekeeping.

Shame it is in such a state of disrepair.

Hi bill. I was struck by the number of clocks in there. All different sorts, ornate and plain and modern? You can see 3 of them in one of the photos above and here is another one!

I understand there was an 'agreement' for the reciprocal repair and maintenance of this monastery and the Hala Sultan Tekka Mosque - the Mosque is in splendid condition.

Hi Mate. Didn't notice the clocks, perhaps they were similarly rescued from other places?

Did so like that part of the Island on our albeit short visit. Pretty green even in the height of the Summer. One day heh?
