Just in time for Eroglu to come and re-start the negotiations from the start, just like Muhtar x last time round and then it will be his turn the time after that.

I think we should throw out all UN interference in solution seeking. They just need to provide the resolutions. And, if they can't even get participating countries to obey them, then they have no right to instigate themselves as negotiators in the Cyprus Problem..

Power sharing? The only item on the agenda now is Talat and co's plea bargain.

round of talks from wednsday to continue tommorow.Seems like there very close to agreement:
1)pres.,vice pres duties and functions in a federal state

2)composition of g/c and t/c in the cabnit of ministers and federal structures

3)and seperation of powers of definition of powers between federal govt and constitunt states.

three big difference that still remain are
1)constituint states ability to sigh agreements with other countries
2)two firs
3)and the ceiling of turkish and greek nationals aloowed to come to cyprus

SEEMS that the issue of the two firs turkey for now seems to be backing off.

“SERIOUS DIFFERENCES ON PROPERTY”

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the most serious difference of opinion between the two sides in Cyprus is over the issue of property.
The President was speaking at a special gathering in Famagusta last night where he briefed a group of businessmen on course of the Cyprus negotiation process. Talat explained that the Greek Cypriot Side had rejected proposals brought to the table by the Turkish Side on issues concerning the topic of “Governance and Power Sharing” but he expressed the hope that serious progress would be achieved at the end of the second round of intensive talks on the topic.
The President said that no conclusion was reached on the issues of transition periods and the citizenship rights of TRNC citizens of Turkish origin, adding that any progress on these issues would be an important step towards bringing a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus question.

Pointing out that “property” is one of the issues over which the two sides have serious difference of opinion, Mr Talat underlined the need to achieve progress on this topic in the new round.

The President pointed out that the Turkish Side has been insisting that the property issue could only be solved through exchange, compensation and restitution, adding that the Greek Cypriot Side has been opposing this idea.
He said that one of the main reasons behind non-solution of the Cyprus problem was the failure to start the intensive talks at an earlier date.
Referring to the UN Chief’s visit to Cyprus, the President described it as very important and expressed the hope that an important step would be taken towards peace thanks to the visit.

Transcript of Remarks by Special Adviser of the Secretary-General Alexander Downer following 29 January meeting

From our point of view, let me just say this: The leaders want me, on their behalf, to say that significant progress has been made in a series of areas of governance. The leaders have left the meeting feeling positive and there will be a bit more to say next week when the Secretary-General is here and the leaders meet with the Secretary-General. As you know that will be on Monday afternoon. Our expectation is that there will be a joint press conference at the end of that meeting with the Secretary-General, and they will have a bit more to say then.
Question: Has the chapter on governance been concluded?

Mr Downer: Well, the leaders will have more to say about this on Monday afternoon, so I am not going to go into any of the details here.

Question: Are there any scheduled meetings between the leaders next week or the week after the visit of the Secretary-General?

Mr Downer: They are going to talk about future programming during the meeting next Monday with the Secretary-General.
