Pragmatic Partitionism and the forum

"Pragmatic Partitionist". Nice phrase that Paliometoxo came up with to describe my attitude to the Cyprus Problem. Simply put - in deference to the majority of folk on this forum - it means simply that I regard partiton as the BEST option for Cyprus, but that I am NOT closed to alternative solutions. Now, that stance has not endeared me to several TC folk on this forum. I make no apologies for that: after all, if you TC's want the TRNC to be a country, you're going to have to stop having Turkey run it for you. But for some reason, the GC folk on this forum - who should logically be saying "Expatkiwi, if you're open to other options, then thank you for not being closed to reunification" - are still flinging their ess-aitch-one-tee at me. Not exactly the best form of persuasion, is it? And you folk have the gall to call ME closed-minded!
It's clear that this forum is a microcosm of the general sentiment in Cyprus. It saying quite clearly that the GC and TC communities still despise each other, and that outside opinions are not welcome. Still, given your total inability to try and get things patched up, probably the outside world is the only chance to get that achieved.

We're patching things up one patch at a time, thanks.

Starting with a patch of land in Lapithos, belonging to a man whose name, Apostle, means missionary, a pioneer of an important cause, spreading the good news to the world.

So how would you put things back together, Hermes?

The Turkish army leaves. It's so simple that I don't know why nobody has thought of it before.

and then TCs at the mercy of GCs, been there before not a pretty picture - megaolmaniacs without fear of inflicting persecution and apartheid towards TCs.

You hate the army less for the people lost, and more for their halting the hellenisation of Cyprus. You know it more than anyone else.

Bollocks. Apartheid is what we have now courtesy of "taksim". The Turkish army is here to serve that end as you go on to admit. Thank you for clarifying the invasion of Cyprus as an attack on hellenic culture. Except for one caveat. It's not to stop the hellenisation of Cyprus that the Turkish army invaded but to de-hellenise it by expelling its people and eradicating its heritage. Turkish policy on Cyprus is less about the T/Cs and more about attacking the culture and aspirations of Greek Cypriots. It is remarkable that you are prepared to admit it.

The Army is both a help and hinderence. A help because it does give the Turkish Cypriots a sense of security, and a hinderence because it shows clearly who calls the shots in North Cyprus. Personally, the numbers do need to be severely pared back, but some presence would need to be maintained until the TC's can feel that there won't be any recurrence of the intercommunal fighting...
