How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Dear friends,

It is very interesting to see how people that don’t know me talk about me and have opinions based on what others write about me rather than reading directly my articles. I am giving to you my article published in Politis newspaper 28/06/2005 on Antreas Parashos Coolum Parteri, titled Which Is The Other Side. Before I do this let me tell you one more thing. There is now innocent side in this island. Even if it seems for a time that Turkish propaganda is using me, you must understand that next documentary showing the Greek suffering can also be used by Greek propaganda. This is stupidity; I am not trying to promote sides I am after the hidden truths that both sides struggled to keep hidden so the people stay separated in their hearts and minds. All have suffered all have lost; only death has achieved.

"My friend Sener, (Levent)

Any criticism from you is always a healthy challenge and a good opportunity for dialogue.

I am not sure if you’re wondering was about me speaking in a meeting that most people where nationalist or the title given by the newspaper "I am proud of you". I am sure you sincerely worry about me loosing the way, as I would worry about you if in your articles wrote something that promoted Denktas.

When I was asked to talk at the Rocks Hotel, I neither knew the purpose of the meeting or the kind of audience I was to have. When I so at the entrance a sign, "No entry for Greeks ", there was not chance for me to live the place. I thought my friend Sener that the doctor does not go where there are no sick people. For lots of years we talk amongst ourselves, the leftist with the leftist, the rightist with the rightist, the Yes Voters with the Yes Voters, the No Voters with the No Voters. As the healthy has no need of doctor, so the converted dos not need conversion. If we are going to change our world we must come to dialogue with all that are part of our society, even if they are nationalist, racialist etc. Our fight is not that of destroying each other because then we become like them that for so many years have polluted the sky of our country. If a rightist says something that I agree with, I will support his point to the end. The same I will do with the leftist. If there is disagreement, I will submit my argument and build a dialogue workshop to find those compromises that make co existence possible. This is the freedom of an indoctrinated internationalist, out of this freedom I cannot exist or function.

As for the quotation “I am proud of you”, with a hundred ways somebody can explain. I said it also to the Greeks but no journalist was there to quote me. You see my friend Sener, The North from the South is farther than what the Green Line is showing us and news don’t travel fast if is not for our benefit. Many have asked me why in my film I show only the one side. I surprised them by asking back “Which is the other side?” For me there is no other side. My people are both the Greeks and Turks of Cyprus, or why do we engrave on our banners, “The Turkish Cypriots are our brothers”. What kind of brothers we are if ones pain is not the others pain. But from what I have suffered I have learned Sener, if you talk about the “others” pain you are either a traitor or a propaganda instrument. That’s why we must all shut up and let the “vipers” destroy also our children with the poison of hatred.

I could go on and say much to release you from your agony, but I must respect the newspaper space. You can read in July my book that will be published with my new documentary and understand better my line of thinking.

Everybody says that they want solution Sener, but the island is separated because those sitting on the table negotiating, they only think what they can gain from a solution. Nobody yet has said “What can I GIVE to achieve a solution”. I gave what I had; the only thing left is some suits from the bank that wants to take away from me the leftovers of my little fortune. I gladly give it to my country. I never believed they will build for me a statue in Eleftheria square. Did I say Eleftheria? (Eleftheria is the Greek name for Freedom).

Everything we said at the university is still my truth.
Always with a friendly mode.

A heart felt post by a decent man, reading this post and all the messages contained within, it embaresses me that we the cypriot people have reduced ourselves to the level of want and not give, i hope all that read this post take on board what he is saying.

Tony, welcome to the forum. Most of us here have seen your first documentary, which was indeed thought-provoking. It is sad that the documentary only attained coverage in the north, because it would have been most "therapeutic" if it was seen by GCs - I suppose that was the point of the exercise. Instead, the fact that it is the TCs who saw it just confirms them in their belief that "they are the innocent side".

I always thought that it would be a good idea if you did a documentary - perhaps with the help of a TC colleague - which simultaneously shows the suffering of both sides, and the brutality that all Cypriots were subjected to, either by other Cypriots, or by the military/paramilitary forces from Turkey and Greece.

I know that you will probably respond "a Turkish Cypriot should do a documentary about the suffering of Greek Cypriots" - but think about it: If such a documentary is made what do you think its fate will be? It will be shown by all the GC TV channels, and by none of the TC TV channels. It will still be half of the people crying over their half of the story, which leads us nowhere.

What we need is a shared emotional experience, where all Cypriots mourn over all the sufferings of Cyprus, together. You are a good person and a good director, and I hope that you will eventually achieve this goal through your film-making.

By the way, is your second documentary available on the internet yet? If not, and if you would like to make it available through this forum for us, I could give you some space on my own server.

I will like to show you one of the most resent emails I have received so you may understand some of the things I have to deal with everyday.
It’s only to show you what extreme nationalism can create in the hearts of people.

Oi Tourkosporoi prodotes san esena axizoun mono ton atimasmeno 8anato
kai 8a ton exeis

O Arxigos
Georgios Grivas digenis

Translation in English.

People with Turkish sperm traitors like you deserve death and a shameful death and you will have it

The chief
George Grivas Digenis

I receive about hundred emails of this kind every month.
Is this the island you want to live in?
Not me not my children, that’s why I do with joy and peace of heart what I do.

Sorry I will not be able to follow the forum 100 because I don’t have own internet line.

Mr Lordos it was always my intention to make a documentary and show also the TC the Greek pain.
Thank you
