Tony Angastiniotis answers to Cyprus Forum

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby -mikkie2- » Tue Jul 19, 2005 2:32 pm

Hello Tony and welcome to the forum.

I can understand where you are coming from. Unfortunately, it seems that quite a few Cypriots have not yet learned from the past mistakes and have not developed their minds to be more open. I would hope that these few people that think they are being patriotic by supporting the past actions of Grivas and EOKA B are few and far between. However, it is people such as yourself that are brave enough to ask the difficult questions and to tackle them head on that will actually start making people change their attitudes. I have not seen your documentary but many people in this forum that have, have made comments, some positive, some negative. I gather that you are approaching this from a humanitarian point of view as opposed to a political one. If only there were an equivalent TC person in a position to do the same.

One constructive comment I can make is that you urgently need to balance out your documentary with another looking at the other side of the coin. This is an undertaking you cannot do yourself but would require a willing TC partner to get involved. Hower, I think you will probably have great difficulty finding such a person. We may still have a few EOKA B fanatics, but the Turks have the Grey Wolves and I doubt that they would make the life of a TC that was willing to get involved in such a project particularly easy.

Hi mikkie2

I understand what you are saying but we must resist our fears or hatred will go on to the next generations the same way we have inherited hade from our father’s generation.
What most people don’t know is that I was a Greek nationalist that supported EOK B and I hated the Turks. I changed because by investigating history I found out that not everything is said about what happened in this island. I had real eye witness *not willing to talk on camera( that told me about mass killings of TC that will shock any person with a normal brain. I have also spoke with Turkish soldiers that have admitted executions against Gc.
If we are going to build the bridge of peace we must both admit our wrong doings. This is the road to understanding, reconciliation and lasting peace.
Next documentary is about the referendum and what really happened and at the same time a documentary about Greek suffering. I will do my best to preserve my life and finish this projects.

I don’t really believe most of them but is not really comfortable when they come, I have 4 children. I sleep well at night and move on with my life.

I live in a small village in the South with no real protection but I try to follow my instincts. I spend also a lot of time in Famagusta at the University because its where I edited my film and now I am sending it in deferent Festivals.

I would imagine the rewards of your work will come eventually in the form of peace on our island and recognition of your documentaries contribution to the peace achieved, the only thing else that i can say is keep up the good work, well done mate.

Tony, from what I remember Bro' telling me about your work and from what I've just read about it myself, I can only say that as someone who is not Cypriot but loves its people of whatever extraction, you have my upmost admiration and respect. You are an example of what it means to be Cypriot, to feel a closeness with others whether they are muslim or christian and also to seek to find the truth, a rare commodity in a place where fact is so often warped by belonging to one community or another and the fictions that are constructed as a result.

Given your role I will pm you with an idea that I have juggled with for some time but am not in a position to implement, nor would want to since I feel this would have to come through Cypriots alone, not from the outside.

In the meantime, I salute your courage and wish you the best of luck with your future projects. I will try to get hold of a copy of your documentaries, but living where I do, it's not so easy. I was in Cyprus during the latter stages of the referendum campaign and as an 'outsider' (I have strong connections to the island through marriage) I have to admit being shocked at the reactions I saw, being used to watching UK election campaigns. It was like someone had opened a can of hate and sprinkled it liberally over some of the 'no' campaigners. I will never forget those days, it made me realise how seemingly rational people can turn into demons when presented with a divisive and highly emotive issue.
