An anagram, not an acronym. Just rearrange the letters.

Whose land exactly did you attempt to build your property on? Were you aware that the majority of the land in the north of Cyprus is occupied land that legally belongs to someone else? If you knew these people are unscrupulous, are you surprised you have had your money stolen?

The "TRNC" is a strange place to fall in love with. Your "developer" Gary Robb was a fugitive drug-trafficker. The leading officials of the "TRNC" are not politicians in the sense that we understand them but crooks and war criminals on the make. In the "TRNC" it is the criminals and thieves who make and enforce the law. It is a mirror-society to the rest of the planet. In the "TRNC" right is wrong and wrong is right. We know all about them in the South. They called their brutal invasion a "peace operation" and they call the theft of our land an "exchange". Nothing that you think makes sense, does. It is an Alice in Wonderland world. Only there is nothing wonderful about it.

The "law" serves the unlawful and corrupt. They make their own laws and the law protects their interests. They do not take kindly to others infringing on their criminality. In their logic, criminality is their "right". We hear it all the time from them. When they speak of their "rights", they mean the right to keep what they have stolen. This is the world of the "TRNC". Expect no justice from the system. The system is itself illegal, unrecognised. Law and justice are a mirage. They can literally get away with murder.

For this reason, paranoia runs deep. They fear justice, real justice, more than anything. Witness their hysteria this week at the verdict in the British courts over the Orams case. Justice came in the form of a mild-mannered architect and a dedicated lawyer. But this was a case built up over years with recourse to the international legal system. Not the "courts" of the "TRNC".

You have found to your cost that the "TRNC" is a kleptocracy. A gangsters' paradise. They prey on the greedy, the chancers, the gullible, knowing that the law cannot touch them. If it's some consolation, their days are numbered. The Orams case has done for them. It took a British court to nail the coffin on their scams. For you, I'm afraid it's all a bit late.

You should have perhaps paid more attention to the UK Foreign Office advice on buying property in the "TRNC". Maybe it wasn't worded strongly enough. Maybe they could have done more to warn you. But I guess we're all adults and must take responsibility for our decisions. You live and learn, don't you?

Excellent post.

This will be my only post of this site. What an embittered lot of people. It's great up here in the North. The property thing means nothing bar for short term panic by a few. Good for those that are buying with maybe a dip in property prices. It's so friendly and placid up here and the people have so little antagonism compared to many in the South. There are 3 sides to my story; your side, my side and then the truth. It's wonderful up here in the best part of free Cyprus.

Ok Guys & Gals here goes - our tins hats are at the ready (as usual) ........ :D

That letter was written 26 months ago and caused quite a stir as ovver 5000 copies were mailed or posted on the www. We tried to buy in 2003 when the FCO website said very little and the www was new to many (especially us - we had no internet at the time). We asked what we thought were all the right Questions to what we at the time thought were all the right people. Lawyers who were UK trained, the FCO !!! And the land registry. We were shown papers that the land we were interested had been legally exchanged and saw the papers to supposedly prove this – and even spoke to lawyers in the UK. So when you are not told to expect a problem as everything looked to be legal – you proceed albeit with caution. The UK director of AGA Development was not mentioned AT ALL, and we didn’t know of his existence till May 2005 – what did we do – continue to pay or be in breach on contract – Catch 22. Who were we to believe at the time – none told us that this may not have been exchange land

Remember at the time we were not, as we are now, highly experienced in the workings of the non-existent allegedly corrupt legal system of the TRNC. Read the blog – all 2 years of it and it tells quite a story. We have been seriously threatened for being ‘Loud Women’ on a regular basis since March 2007, but we haven’t given up. We have even printed an email (http://latchfords.spaces.live.com/blog/ ... !336.entry) that we were copied into by mistake proving beyond all reasonable doubt the corruption that apparently reigns supreme in the TRNC – Do you all seriously think that we would have done what we did do if we knew what the costs were.....costs not only financially but emotionally – including the death of one of our husbands !

It doesn’t make the fact that we wanted to live in the TRNC right – yes live – no not buy cheap and sell – LIVE ! Our properties were far from cheap £120,000 (small 3 bed villa no garage) upwards. So in conclusion – we are big enough to admit we were wrong, but with the evidence we were shown in 2003 it was not surprising that we went ahead with what we assumed to be an idyllic dream. We will carry on with our lawsuit in the USA against the TRNC/Turkey, even if it only stirs up international feelings and we will carry on telling it how it really is, so that others do not fall into the trap that we did after all we are human (or we were according to some). Cyprus has been lambasted (thinks that the right word) creeds have been displaced – it will never be right – and until there are legal systems in place for foreign property investors both North & South (see CPAG) – Cyprus shouldn’t be selling ANY PROPERTY.

Now we await the fallout - or a banning notice - as usual – yikes ................
