Breaking News: Orams quit Cyprus house

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Gasman » Sun Jan 24, 2010 11:54 pm

Wasn't it said that the TRNC would build them a new villa over there?

In their place, I'd want to be as far away as possible from it all over there. Most of the attention they will get will be unwelcome. They are a walking reminder to every other ex pat Brit in the same situation of the dangers.

And what's their claim to fame anyway? They battled through the courts for years to try to prevent a GC man hanging onto what was rightfully his. How would they feel if the same fate befell them re their UK property whilst they were away from it?

Even in the UK there will be many many Orams detractors. Don't more GCs live in London alone than in the whole of Cyprus?

We know who the "others" are I think. The occupying authorities in the north overplayed their hand. They thought after the Annan referendum that they were on a roll and the diplomatic tide was turning in their favour. This was a political case from the outset to use the EU courts to legalise the confiscation of property and pressure the ROC into accepting a solution on Turkish terms.

It is no coincidence they turned to Cherie Blair to defend the Orams. This entire case was backed by Turkey to pacify the Greek Cypriots. They miscalculated. For one, the EU and British courts are independent. Two, the Greek Cypriot case was valid.

Once Turkey made an issue of defending the Orams they charged into the legal process without seeing the possibility or the consequences of failure. They believed their own propaganda that the "facts on the ground" are all that matter now. They really did believe that Mr. Apostolides and all the dispossessed had no valid legal rights in the north and that the British and EU courts were bound to find in Turkey's favour.

They have been disabused of that illusion. Turkey and Talat went for it big time - like a drunken over-confident gambler - and lost everything.

Thank God for the British legal system, Justice Pill and the EU courts. They came through for us in the end ...

Wait and watch how things unfold, this battle may have been lost but the war is far from over. The costs are being met by the TCs and the Orams will get a seafront home this time also compliments of the TRNC who will ake control of the old villa, it will be interesting to see if Apostiilides tries to claim or use the house.

You gonna buy a villa on the beach for every other carpetbagger that loses out?

Some poetic justice here. Her reputation as a "human rights" lawyer has been ripped to shreds by this. No wonder she didn't turn up to the final ruling. Also, if you read the court judgement document, you'll see she made some sloppy mistakes.

That's what we've been telling you all along! :D

However, this is all new territory to you ... Law Courts! Yet Hellenism was founded in this way; and in this way, it can beat all enemies. 8)

May I tempt you with some hemlock ....

They could just finish off one of the thousands of unfinished ugly concrete hulks over there for the Orams. Plenty to choose from. Some haven't had any further work done on them in years. They could throw in a row of empty glass fronted shops for them too. Hundreds of those there!

Anyone who has distant memories of the place and hasn't visited it in recent years probably wouldn't WANT to live there now. There are stretches going up the panhandle that look like huge inner city council estates with all the little matchbox houses crowded in.

And the ridiculous bits like the Lions Garden - so flashy and in such bad taste - glittering away there in the middle of what looks like wasteland!

Oh I know! They could put the Orams up on one of the splendid Camp Sites over there - gawd has anyone ever seen them? Reminiscent of the shanties and shacks being erected for the Haiti Quake victims.

I wonder why the TRNC hasn't offered to build new homes and give them to the ABAG group - they should have more sympathy for them. They got nothing for their money!

Isn't that a dangerous precedent?

Promises, promises. If you were the Orams, would you risk trespassing on other people's land again?
