NICOSIA - The government has lambasted the Turkish Cypriot side for blaming the Greek Cypriots for causing flood chaos in the north.
“The statements of Mr Dervis Eroglu, with which he blames the Government of Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus for the floods in the occupied area of Morphou consist of an abuse and a disgrace,” government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said in a written statement.
“It is obvious that Mr Eroglu is trying to undermine the trust between the two communities in Cyprus by blaming the Greek Cypriot side even about weather phenomena," the statement said, adding that government condemns Mr Eroglu’s comments and stresses that it cares for the people of Cyprus as a whole, Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
“The floods in the occupied area of Morphou were not caused by actions taken by the Greek Cypriots, but from the prolonged rainfall that caused floods in the area of Astromeritis as well,” the statement concluded.
Reportedly, Turkey will send a financial aid of 1 million USD to the north following recent flood damage.
