Murataga,Atlilar and Sandallar Families Calls For Justice

Postby halil » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:04 pm

The Remembrance Association of Martyrs of Murataga, Atlilar and Sandallar has applied to the Greek Cypriot Prosecutorship for the arrest and trial of Greek Cypriot murderers involved in the killing of Turish Cypriots in 3 villages in 1974.

Relatives of 126 women and children who were killed in the massacre have been in search of those responsible for the atrocity since the opening of crossing points.

In a statement, the President of the Association Ahmet Asir said that 30 of those responsible for the killings have been identified and that members of the Association forwarded the list of the names to the Greek Cypriot Prosecutorship, asking for a trial.

He reminded that women, children and the old were left behind under the mercy of armed Greek Cypriots until the 14th of August after unarmed men from the three villages were taken captive by Greek Cypriots on the 20th July 1974.

“Those people were subjected to all sorts of torture, including rape”, Ahmet Asir said while recalling the bitter past.

He went on saying that they were taken from their homes on the 14th of August after being told by the Greek Cypriots that they were moving to a safer place.

“However women and children were later killed in persecution” he added.

Not that the killers shouldn't be brought to justice, but how sensible is it to bring this up in the closing stages of settlement talks? The tragic victims of this atrocity are being exploited by elements of their own side.

Truth and reconciliation comes after a peace deal.

Yes, can see where you're coming from ES, as long as we see ourselves as two comms, people will use some matters to further their own side's position, either at the talks or appealing to international opinion.

So what do we do? Stop all these investigations, stop the Orams case and the ECHR cases? Should all come to a halt pending a settlement, one we all suspect is a very, very long way off.

... but have to say, in my partisan way, there has been a notable increase in tissy quarters in recent months to bring such things as the events of the early sixties and '74 up at every opportunity.
