`BITTER EXPERIENCES OF THE PAST SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN`

Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu has warned that a possible new partnership that could be established in Cyprus would not prove lasting if bitter experiences of the past are forgotten.

The Prime Minister said his party has been keeping the realities of the past in mind while taking any steps.

`I am not giving credit to those accusing me of being intransigent whenever I say this`, Mr Eroglu said.
A delegation from the Konya Culture and Solidarity Association paid a visit to Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu yesterday.

Coordinator Mucahit Bar told Prime Minister Eroglu that the Association aims to spread the philosophy of Celalettin-I Rumi to the world and that it is fully in support of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

For his part, Prime Minister Eroglu explained that a large group of Turks who arrived in Cyprus and settled on the island after 1571 and 1974 Peace Operation were from the Turkish city of Konya.

He also praised the Association for its determination to claim the state.

Stressing that his party would continue to maintain their policies in support of the state no matter whether the party is in government or not, Mr Eroglu said `there is a peace operation which was carried out at the end of a long struggle and we have a state which was born as a result. It is everyone’s responsibility to claim this state `.

He stressed that the Cyprus Turkish people has never accept to live under the mercy of the Greek Cypriots and will never do so.

On the Cyprus negotiation process, the Prime Minister underlined the need to continue the talks by keeping the bitter experiences of the past and Today’s realities in mind.

`Otherwise, a possible new partnership will not last long` he warned.

He's a politician, and his stance is gaining popularity among an electorate who felt betrayed when the promises to ease their isolation if they voted YES to the Annan Plan failed to materialize. Of course, a lot of that can be laid at the feet of the late Tassos Papadopoulos, but now you can see the results of that...

And they won't accept going back to the 1960 setup, so that only leaves building a new state from the ground up... Time to call the constitutional convention.

so they can go home to turkey.. they are 99% mainland turks anyway ;).. there is that option also.. we dont like the two state option and the turks would never agree to going to turkey.. so it looks like we should settle for middle ground wherever that is.. but its not partition in ANY form

The RoCy was actually imposed on Cyprus by the UK. If a solution needs to be found that involves a single Cypriot state, then it has to be created by Cypriots for Cypriots. That means overhauling the 1960 Constitution.
