TRNC Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun has said that the desire to see Cyprus as a “Greek island” is the Greek Cypriots’ sole and ultimate goal.
He said that the Greek Cypriot Side persisted on ignoring the realities that there are two separate peoples, two separate religions and cultures in Cyprus. Responding to statements made by the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias on the occasion of Epiphany Day, the TRNC Foreign Minister said that the Greek Cypriot Side’s actions and stance was making it harder and harder for the Turkish Side to trust the Greek Cypriot leadership.
The Greek Cypriot leader expressed his desire and hope of “blessing” the Turkish Side during yesterday’s Epiphany Day celebrations in Larnaca.
Ozgurgun said that such statements only served to incite racism and enmity between the two sides.
“The only way to reach a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem is through accepting the political equality of the two sides and respecting each other’s religious and cultural heritage” he said
Ozgurgun also called on the Greek Cypriot leadership to be sensitive and not to exploit religious days and beliefs for political gains.
Also referring to the Greek Cypriot leader’s statements made during the Greek Cypriot Journalist Association’s New Year reception, he called on Christofias to remember the historical realities on the island.
“The island of Cyprus was divided as a result of the violence initiated by Greek Cypriots in 1963 in line with the Akritas Plan. That was when the Green Line was drawn and that was when UN Peacekeepers were called in” he added.
Stressing that Cyprus remained divided because of the Greek Cypriot Side’s refusal to recognize the Turkish Side’s political equality, Ozgurgun said that the island’s shameful past was the result of the Greek Cypriot Side’s attempt to annihilate the Turks of Cyprus.
“This is the very same reason why the island has remained divided for the past 46 years` he noted.
The TRNC Foreign Minister also called on the Greek Cypriot leadership to refrain from issuing such statements, which he said, served to harm the atmosphere of confidence and trust trying to be created on the island.
