TRNC Goverment Will Oppose 20% cross-voting weight

Postby halil » Wed Jan 06, 2010 3:27 pm

TRNC Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun said that the government will continue to oppose 20 percent cross-voting weight proposed at the Cyprus Negotiation process.

Mr Ozgurgun stated that the responsibility on the issue lies with President Mehmet Ali Talat and said `what can Ankara do if he insist on accepting 20 percent cross-voting weight`.

Foreign Minister Ozgurgun told BRT last night that the government is not against the negotiation process but complained that the Greek Cypriot side does not have the political will to negotiate a settlement.

‘We are conveying our concerns on all issues. But the responsibility lies with President Mehmet Ali Talat. He is the negotiator’ the Foreign Minister said, underlining the need for the President to listen to the views of the People.

`He has the authority to negotiate but the presidential elections will be held in the near future. Vital steps that can cause permanent damage – should not be taken` Mr Ozgurgun noted.

Asked to comment on President Talat’s statements that all proposals brought to the table were prepared in cooperation with Turkey, the Minister said `what can Ankara do if he insists on accepting 20 percent cross-voting weight`.

Responding to another question, he said that the Party Leader is to stand as the Presidential candidate of the National Unity Party in accordance with the principles of the UBP.

TALAT PUT FORWARD NEW IDEAS:

The Presidential Spokesperson Hasan Ercakica has said that President Mehmet Ali Talat put forward new ideas on the issue of governance and power sharing at his meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias on Monday.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing, the Presidential Spokesperson said that the Greek Cypriot Side will be responding to those ideas in the upcoming meetings.

Asked whether he discussed these ideas with Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu before bringing them to the table, Mr Ercakica said that all views and ideas were prepared in consultation with the government as well as Turkey.

Stating that the President had no plans to hold a meeting with political parties in the TRNC ahead of the series of intensive talks scheduled to start next week, Mr Ercakica said that the President will have time to brief political party representatives at the end of the first week of discussions.

TALAT MEETS BAROSSO :

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat will have contacts in Brussels and Ankara just days before the launch of the intensive talks in Cyprus. President Talat will meet with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barosso in Brussels this afternoon.

He will then move on to Ankara where he will have discussions with Turkish leaders.

President Talat flew to Brussels this morning for a meeting with President of the EU Commission Jose Manuel Barosso.

The President is expected to bring the question of how the EU would contribute to the negotiations process to the agenda of the meeting.

Tomorrow, Mr. Talat will move on to the Turkish Capital for a two day visit where he will meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

He will also attend the Second Ambassadors’ Conference at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he will provide technical information about the negotiations process.

President Talat and Turkish officials will exchange views on the Cyprus issue in order to obtain maximum results from the intensive talks.

Halil, the bash patriots on our side also oppose this and hold Christofias to ransom for making such a profound concession to the occupiers.

Athens, no problem, there bananiot-like Andreas Papandreou will be only too willing to sell Cyprus.

A mechanism like the "cross voting" proposal would prevent extremist ethnic politics as a candidate would have to try to collect votes from both communities. Both communities would also have equal power to vote and this would encourage cooperative candidates.
