you pose a good question ioannis. i dont see how they could be considered slaves to the romans since they were emperors. I think that if the Empire spoke Greek then a good classification would be Christian Hellenes maybe? Let's not forget that it was a byzantine emperor (Theodosis) that destroyed many ancient greek sanctuaries and even abolished the olympic games so im guessing at one point there would be a distinctin between greek and christian greek.
