NICOSIA: The tough new smoking rules have cut patronage at Cyprus nightclubs by 40%, a spokesman for the trade group representing them said.

The spokesman told CyBC radio that the ban would be bad for entertainment centres like clubs and it would get worse. He added that whole face of night time entertainment in Cyprus was set to change.

Police spokesman Michaelis Katsounotos said that cluband restaurant owners had shown a high level of responsibility and that as a result there had been few complaints.

He said that there had been 648 checks that resulted in only 49 smoking infringements

Remarkable. On 648 occasions in four or five days, CY police had nothing better to than visit night-clubs to check up on this alleged smoking ban.

Police in the UK would do exactly the same - and we have drug dealers, pimps, burgalries, car theft, knives, guns and much more!

a few years ago, the OZ pubs faced the same problem...not because of prices but for lack of customers as the pub tradition was dying...to breath new air into these venues and the government losing out on revenue they came up with a new scheme...lets introduce pokies into these venues...now they are packed...everyone happy but for the poor addicted souls losing their money...

I can see the UK going sown this track...

BTW...i do no smoke tailor made cigarettes, i smoke tally ho's...a packet of tobacco costs me 23 bucks and lasts a whole week...can't stand the tailor mades...

I think you are spot on boomerang. Pubs need to do different things to tempt people in. Karaoke did it, darts did it, now they need to try different things and introduce something. I mentioned this earlier but got hammered for it.

People love playing Wii, XBox and PS3 - why not do some kind of competition or something? Try it and see. It maybe fun!

Think about this though and this is just one example...

Lets say there was a Fifa Pub League ok and my local the Red Lion particapted. A team consists of 6 players. So when a pub team takes on another pub team there would be 10 games per night. 20 minutes a game say. Thats 200 minutes of game time and 200 minutes of drinking etc. 12 players supping beer etc for 3 hours plus.
