Take me as an example - I'm not a big drinker but i used to go to my local twice a week - Monday for footie (as the misssus watches all the soaps and its double corrie etc) so I'd go about 7.30 and get home around 10ish - I'd have maybe 4 pints , a couple of quid on the bandit , bag of nuts etc and maybe spend around £20

Then I'd go down with my lad on a friday or Saturday for a couple of hours and spend around £20 again - not a lot I know

But since the smoking ban If I am honest I have been down maybe 10 times Maximum

So I've gone from spending around £2000 a year in my local to spending around £200 a year Max

It doesnt take a great many people like me to have a big effect on sales and I wasn't a regular like others who have stopped going

Fair enough.....what about in the summer though when it's nice and hot and you could (if you have one) sit in the beer garden?

Hello! I hear the sound of straws being clutched!

No, because my next question would have been did you smoke in doors when the weather was nice or did you go outside then? £2000 to £200 is a massive drop.

Of course it is!

Who wants to stand outside in the rain and have a smoke?

Also, who wants to wait inside while their mates stand outside and have a smoke?

Then, once another pattern has been established (going round to each other's houses to meet up for instance), why go back to the pub?

But as you said it was ok standing outside in November?

No spongehead.

I said the weather wasn't too bad on one particular November day (it was the 5th)...

You certainly wouldn't want to be standing outside on an average November day and I wouldn't want to be outside in the snow right now.

Also, while the smokers popped outside for a fag the rest of us stayed indoors - hardly the recipe for a fun day is it?

So that's November to say middle of Feb/early March it's abit chilly. What about the remaining months?

All the other months when it is pissing down...? Standing outside in the rain while the people you came to the pub with are inside?

Look spongehead, nobody is denying your point that prices have risen and made pubs less competitive.

But the facts on the rate of pub closers and losses of breweries since the ban was introduced are unequivocal...

Standing out in the rain, with or without an umbrella while your mates are indoors in the warm does not a pleasant evening make.

NICOSIA: The tough new smoking rules have cut patronage at Cyprus nightclubs by 40%, a spokesman for the trade group representing them said.

The spokesman told CyBC radio that the ban would be bad for entertainment centres like clubs and it would get worse. He added that whole face of night time entertainment in Cyprus was set to change.

Police spokesman Michaelis Katsounotos said that cluband restaurant owners had shown a high level of responsibility and that as a result there had been few complaints.

He said that there had been 648 checks that resulted in only 49 smoking infringements

Remarkable. On 648 occasions in four or five days, CY police had nothing better to than visit night-clubs to check up on this alleged smoking ban.
