Take me as an example - I'm not a big drinker but i used to go to my local twice a week - Monday for footie (as the misssus watches all the soaps and its double corrie etc) so I'd go about 7.30 and get home around 10ish - I'd have maybe 4 pints , a couple of quid on the bandit , bag of nuts etc and maybe spend around £20

Then I'd go down with my lad on a friday or Saturday for a couple of hours and spend around £20 again - not a lot I know

But since the smoking ban If I am honest I have been down maybe 10 times Maximum

So I've gone from spending around £2000 a year in my local to spending around £200 a year Max

It doesnt take a great many people like me to have a big effect on sales and I wasn't a regular like others who have stopped going

Fair enough.....what about in the summer though when it's nice and hot and you could (if you have one) sit in the beer garden?

No, because my next question would have been did you smoke in doors when the weather was nice or did you go outside then? £2000 to £200 is a massive drop.

Of course it is!

Who wants to stand outside in the rain and have a smoke?

Also, who wants to wait inside while their mates stand outside and have a smoke?

Then, once another pattern has been established (going round to each other's houses to meet up for instance), why go back to the pub?

No spongehead.

I said the weather wasn't too bad on one particular November day (it was the 5th)...

You certainly wouldn't want to be standing outside on an average November day and I wouldn't want to be outside in the snow right now.

Also, while the smokers popped outside for a fag the rest of us stayed indoors - hardly the recipe for a fun day is it?

Now I might be an old geezer ...but to me the pub was always a sacred haven where I could meet my mates have a few pints and smoke away to my hearts content.

TBH I always smoked indoors even in the summer, I didnt want some piss pot nicking or interfereing with my pint while I was out

As has been said £2000 (which is not a lot compared to other drinkers) down to £200 (and If I'm honest it probably wasnt that much ) is a big drop If say 20 regulars at my local have stoppped going also then you're looking at around the £40k a year mark which is around £28K GP down the drain - or say 3 bar persons out of work.

Having said that i do understand the rights of non-smokers to be entitled to a smoke free environment , But the Legislation could and IMO Should have taken both sides into consideration

10 years ago pub leagues were very popular. Darts, dominos, footy, rugby? and bowls were the main sports. They helped to provide a decent income for the landlord/landlady. I wonder how many teams have just disolved into thin air.

Times have changed, us chaps have other ways to meet up now and other things to entertain us.

I don't smoke and have to admit that I very rarely go-to the boozer. I used to go 2 or 3 times a week and spend £15 - £20 a time. I probably go once every 3 months now. I go-to the shops, pickup some beers, wine or vodka and drink at home. It's much cheaper this way
