Family and community ties are very strong in Cyprus, which is the reason why you never see any local homeless people. However, since Cyprus acceded to the EU there has been a slow but steady increase in the number of people who have come from other EU countries (particularly Poland, Romania and Bulgaria) in search of work, but have been unable to find a job and have ended up destitute and homeless. Lana's article makes this clear.

Same problem with overseas economic migrants in UK.Once the seasonal work dries up they have nothing but refuse to go back to their country of origin. They also seem to find money for drink and cigarettes! If it was up to me they would all be repatriated back to their own country and that countries embassy would be picking up the bill for it.Now there are thousands of British born people out of work there is not the money to keep all these extra people so they must go home and ask family friends or their own government for handouts. We are all heartily sick of the do gooders who cannot see the sense in what I am suggesting.Same do gooders live nowhere near all these revolting squats etc so do not have to tolerate what others have to.

“It’s not so bad for these people in the summer months, but now it’s colder, the possibility of developing pneumonia and other conditions greatly increases,” said Filaktis Constantinides, the manager of Paphos General Hospital.

He’s having a laugh. Does he not realise that winter in Cyprus is the equivalent of summer in Poland and also the UK. We would have no problem coping with the winter months unlike the indigenous Cypriots who do feel the cold much more easily.

As for me coming to Cyprus and sponging of the state is a definite no, no. If I come to Cyprus I will want to work and pay my way like other Cypriots. I’m actively looking for work now. I will consider anything.

I would also be prepared to learn Greek language if necessary. If anybody wants to offer me employment and/or teach me Greek I would be more than happy.

I am perfectly aware of what the Turks have done to the Greeks in the North of the island and I am totally apposed to their illegal occupation. I am also angry at the Brits who have purchased property in Northern Cyprus in the full knowledge that it wasn’t the Turks property in the first place. As far as I’m concerned if those Brits end up losing their homes - tough!

PS
I am not a drinker, but a hard worker.
