Misjudgement of EU's Acceptance of Turkey Sinks Leverage

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Misjudgement of EU's Acceptance of Turkey Sinks Leverage

Postby Acikgoz » Thu Dec 31, 2009 1:05 pm

As the majorities on both sides revert to script, probabilities of an accepted partition are becoming more realistic.

Turkey has been getting steadily increasing resistance from the EU - probability of joining diminishing rapidly. The already tepid Germans and currently opposed French have had their short term intentions well played out for them using RoC's issues to lead the charge.
RoC has provided enough ammo for the EU to pretty much halt the EU dead in its tracks and Papad's objective of using the EU for a pro-RoC solution in a questionable position.

The hand has, I would opine, been overplayed. The Cyprus unification via the EU has backfired into it's partition.

With the EU leverage rapidly losing strength on Cyprus situation, the EU with no carrot for full membership for Turkey will weigh on EU's response to the Cyprus and the region. With political influence lost between all parties to the Cyprus discussion, economic issues will take centre stage. EU will look at Turkey + TCs Economic impact on EU as a whole vis-a-vis South Cyprus.

Latest: Minarets in Switzerland vs Halki in Turkey - or whichever other religious undercurrent you wish to add.

Activity in the TRNC property market is actually starting to show green shoots again over the last 2 months.

Greek land in the North, Turkish land in the South - get ready for cents on the dollar. Possession being 9/10ths of the law will become further cemented. Look for more GC applications to Turkish Cypriot Property Commission, and one in South Cyprus as the need to address the property issue becomes more urgent.

Time to start thinking about horse trading: for example we'll probably pick up on the Varosha vs recognising Ercan discussion soon - it works for all sides, increases standard of living for South and North.

Only objections will come from the haters, but even Greek Cypriots have wised up to their leading politicians promising the whole island all on their terms without paying the price. The majority too will move on. With the seven stages of grief described as:
Shock/Disbelief
Denial
Bargaining
Guilt
Anger
Depression
Acceptance and Hope

I'd say the Bargaining part will soon be over, hopefully the path to Acceptance and Hope will not take too long.

Partition already exists. To assume that the RoC will sign off her rightful territory to Turkey, or to an internationally condemned illegal entity is beyond wishful thinking.

There's a growing trend on this forum in using the term 'possession is 9/10ths of the law'.

To clarify, this only applies when the owner of a property willingly or through wanton disregard, abandons a property and not in the case of Cyprob, where the owner was forcibly removed. In the UK, if a property is wilingly abandoned for 25 years, it then becomes the property of the possessor.

The "bargaining" so far has only been done by the EU. What makes you think they are not stringing Turkey along until a few certainties are in place? For example, there is a hasty march on unifying the EU, further, with its own army, now we have a President, and then the "bargaining" will be over for Turkey as they face the EU Military-Might if they don't withdraw from EU territory! That is the future for Turkey ... (Enjoy the hope and possibility of something better, whilst you can, but you are in no position for calling any shots).

Actually, Mr Ed. according to a website law.com, and how I interpret the possession 9/10ths phrase is:

It merely serves to make a point that one who has physical control of his property is clearly at an advantage should his rightful ownership of the property ever be subject to challenge.

Given both sides are unwilling to exchange their unjust gains for just rights then we end up with the situation where each has what they hold. Both sides are guilty of such action. Compromise for the sake of unification has been shown not to work for either party. Living together -both side's requirements cannot be met.

Without leverage GCs will be unable to change the status quo, TCs never had leverage. This is why the horse trading is likely to begin as it should have done decades ago. What a waste of everyone's time and energy, poor Cypriots across the board.

Whether you like it or hate it, seems like Papad is going to make Denktas look like a visionary.

Oracle, you are a barbarian. Like Medea you will sacrifice your own children for your revenge.
Warmonger of the worst blood thirstiest kind.
Are you looking for all the nations to make war on Turkey - this is not 1919. So many lost their lives after the maniacal plotting to dismember what was left of Turkey.
When some look for a lasting peace you look for blood. When some look to raise the standard of living of people you look for pain. When some look to forge understanding you seek death and destruction.
The evil that is Greek Cypriot vengence towards all Turks is like a cancer in your mind which people like you have sought to spoil anything good that could have been on the island of Cyprus.

Acikgoz, as the ECJ ruled in favour of the GC position on the Orams case it's all academic .. whilst you are on law.com look up stolen property.

Unfortunately for you, it doesn’t work like that because Cyprus is not a piece of disputed real estate like some of you seem to conveniently assume, but a UN recognized sovereign nation protected by international law, and those who are ignorant of the meticulous (but not intricate) details of the UN Charter, will always be in the dark as to what can or cannot be achieved with an illegal entity.

As someone who has studied most if not all of the many legal aspects of the Cyprus Problem, I can assure you that the “TRNC” can be taken no further, and that the best an anti-Cypriot can hope for is more of the same!

You suggested clarification on possession being 9/10ths. Sorry if I offended you, perhaps you are too big a greek person to accept any thoughts from a Turkish Cypriot, heavens forbid.
