Sounds like your mate's pub was full of smokers!

I wonder where they will go when the smoking ban comes into force...?

I was arguing with some friends yesterday about the smoking ban (they are visiting from the UK). I argued that there should be freedom of choice - that owners of bars and restaurants should be able to choose if they are smoking or non-smoking.

In that way, both smokers and non-smokers would have the freedom to choose if they frequented an establishment which allowed or banned smoking...

One of the friends said - "but what if the smoking restaurant was really nice? It wouldn't be fair that I couldn't go in there"

Hand >>> face.

Sorry mate , your argument is a non starter.
Smokers should seriously consider the immense damage that they inflict on themselves and the cost of treatment for the huge number of smoke related deceases . Children , men and women have the undeniable right NOT to breath in the disgusting tobacco smell just because drug addicts "enjoy" this third world Bangladeshi habit.

I agree that you have the right not to inhale smoke...

But smokers also have the right to enjoy their 'habit' or 'hobby' (read the article I posted earlier)...

Reasonable, democratic legislation would have given both the choice. As it is, smokers have no rights at all. And non-smokers are unlikely to keep your mate's business going - that is why 50 pubs a week are closing in the UK...

I thought we lived in a free country?

The reason I have a problem with all this (I don't smoke) is that drinkers will be next. Don't expect smokers to help us fight draconian alcohol control legislation in the future if we don't support them now.

Z4, Milti and 1 or 2 others need to calm down and see the bigger picture. I dont always agree with Grump but he he makes a very valid argument (if you care to read the link he provided) you MAY get a view that you may not agree with BUT it does allow other people to live their lives the way THEY choose. If you dont like the smoke - avoid it -if I smoke how do I avoid you???
Love & Best Wishes for a smokey New Year,

No, there is no point discussing anything with you - you respond to reasoned and intelligent discussion with "No" or "I didn't bovver reading it"...

I'm happy for you and your small minded biggoted views actually - I don't expect debate or any intelligent response from you apart from "I don't like it, ipso facto it should be banned"...

Remember tho how we laughed when motorcyclists were forced to wear crash helmets. How we said 'they deserve it' when fat people were denied hospital treatment. How we pointed and sniggered at smokers standing out in the rain...

One day you'll post on here complaining that your pint of Stella is too expensive due to some arbitrary 'price per unit' taxing. or your favourite pub or restaurant has closed. Or you've been denied a pint of Stella because you have exceeded your 'safe' limit.

When that day comes, I'll be using this emoticon a lot! >>>

Oh, and saying "I told you so!"

Absolutely Agree with CG on everything he says. Why couldn't there be a smokers bar & restaurant so non smokers can choose whether to go there or not, and a non smokers venues where smoking is not allowed.

Absolutely!

It is a stupid law which has enraged a sizeable minority (smokers) in the UK plus enlightened people like myself...

The solution you propose would have been simple to implement and completely fair.

It will end in tears...
