Cyprus is not Greek

Postby Raymanoff » Mon Dec 28, 2009 10:35 pm

I do not belong to any political party in Cyprus nor trying to join or support one. I hate the display of a Greek and Cyprus flags together as its demises the Cypriot identity. Cyprus is unique, Cypriots are unique... the dialect, mentality, traditions are unique... the moral unity with Greece is just appalling and disrespectful to this nation. I totally understand the bond with language, history, religion but any display of unity with Greece shows weakness of this nation as an independent country. So many Cypriots are ashamed of their dialect when visiting Greece or when speaking to native Greeks... this pisses me off. I have a Greek koumparos, his Cypriot wife is grilling me every time i speak to him in Cypriot dialect... the guy loves it and tries to learn it :D

Cyprus didn't choose to be be independent. Cyprus was forced to be independent so Turkey and UK could more easily keep their troops and control over our island. Besides this there is no difference between Cyprus and any other Greek island. Go to any other Greek island and you will see that each one has its own dialect. Actually many other Greek islands have dialects very similar to the Cypriot one.

Does it matter what the constitution says? It also says that we should have a Turkish-Speaking vice president but that is not followed ever since 1963...and i agree that the flag of Turkey should not be displayed next to the flag of North Cyprus and the flag of Greece should not be displayed next to the flag of the Republic of Cyprus. And if you think about the culture of Cyprus, we are our own culture. Our culture is very unique. However, I don't think is wrong to force wanna-be Turks or wanna-be Greeks to take down the Greek or Turkish flag...but just don't put it over government buildings i.e town hall!

Contrast with the Australian flag, language and head of state - and the desire of many Aussies to go to the UK.

You obviously have not been to Australia since it does not have any attachment to a 'mother' and if you said otherwise you would probably get clobbered. Australia has it's own Crown, and the flag has not been changed only because it is not seen as a priority.

They can be changed at any moment, provided the Australian people unaminously agree through a plebiscite.

Aussies only go to the UK, usually on work visas, only because it is English Speaking. What else would you expect? Go to Greece instead...

Australia's flag has a small symbol on it. That symbol is also used by the UK but it is not...it is a symbol of the commonwealth countries. (commonwealth realms) more info on the commonwealth countries please go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Realms
