Cypriot Pork...Best in the world?

Postby SKI-preo » Wed Dec 23, 2009 12:35 am

How good is Cypriot Pork? My god WHen I was a little kid that was my favorite meat but when we moved to Australia I was put off by the taste of pork here. I have tried pork in other countries too. It is not as good as Cypriot Pork.

I read that in Cyprus pork was the meat of preference in Ottoman times as it would not be confiscated by the Muslim Ottomans. I think Cypriot pork became something unique. Like the "Cypriot donkey".The Ottomans did not allow infidels like Greek Cypriots to ride horses so Cypriots bred donkeys as big as horses.

We raised pigs in my village before the war. We (the kids) used to feed them Chicken flavored biscuits, napolitano ( Strawberry,Vanilla, Chocolate) ice cream, slabs of makarounia toy fournou we would smuggle from my grandmother. Our "pet" pigs would disappear every so often. Dad would come home with a thousand cuts of pork , lountza and loukanika the next day. We would all stuff our faces with the delicious meat not realizing we just ate our ice cream fed pets.Ah memories.

Anyways- Cyprus should market its unique pork meat like New Zealand Lamb or Japanese Wagyu beef.

I thought we were the only ones who (once) kept a pig as a pet!

My parents were too soft and we kept it till it died of natural causes. Don't know if it was buried :? .... But, I can't eat the poor creatures. :)

Mmmm - babe looks tasty. Imagine the crackling crunching.

Dr George Miller (anglicized version of Miliotis) made that film.

His mob are from Greeks from Megisti/ Anatolian refugees.
