The Greek Orthodox Church has been a uniting force amongst the Greek Cypriots , its influence on the people of Cyprus can not be denied and its vociferous attacks on many issues has not fallen on deaf ears. From politics to moral issues the church has always been prominent in its view. A couple of years back whilst in Cyprus I listened to a sermon on the radio by a priest , well expressed and in superb Greek , castigating and heavily critizizing couples that live together without having been married in a church. He actually referred to such unions by civil ceremonies as not only living in sin but that the women were mere prostitutes.
Such views are I'm certain extreme and rare but the church does have some very extreme views on a number of issues one such issue being the Jehovah's Witnesses and another being the Turkish people including the Turkish Cypriots.
No one is expecting the church to acclaim the Turkish army and refer to as anything other than an occupying army.
The Cypriot Orthodox Church quite intentionally is and has demoted the Cypriot entity by constantly promoting the Hellenic identity. You will see many churches flying the Greek flag contrary to the image that the RoC is proclaiming to the world that Cyprus is an independent sovereign state with its own identity and its own flag as exhibited at international and of course European events.
I respect the role the Church plays in the promotion of the fundamentals of Christianity , Love your neighbour , respect your parents , you must not kill and other such wonderful and civilized doctrines . What I find objectionable and contradictory is the Churches failure to promote reconciliation amongst the Cypriot people of different faiths.
I believe that the church still believes in ENOSIS and not in the Cypriot independent spirit that IS the ONLY avenue that would lead to a peaceful and just outcome . Independence from both Greece and Turkey , embracing the Cypriot spirit and promoting the Cypriot identity .
