I think you mentioned this a few years back. We used to hide the shilling too. I call it St. Denis

Has anyone ever swallowed the shilling??

Reminds me of my younger drinking years ... A game called quarters and a HIGHLY intoxicated girl..
yeah my dumb butt swallowed the quarter..

Jeez! ... forgive our inquisitiveness at this late hour, but how was it removed? (Just asking.)

We celebrate only new year . Every year during 31st december ,new year celebrations start .

most of the people are makes roast turkey filled with special pilafs in it.

Shish,sheftali,kofte kebabs,humus,yogurt,cacik and salads.....

soft drinks, whisky, raki, wine (depends which one u like)....

for sweets:tel kadayif,Gullach or Ekmek kadayifs are the most popular ones.

Also on the charcoal we make chestnut kebab while we are playing cards or watching TV programmes ...... every one waits with great excitement lottery-ticket results to hear from TV screens.

When the clocks shows it is midnight all the lights switches off ....than on again ..... taps opens for a while and closes back again ....Every one celebrate each other new year and gives the gifts to each other.

Specially made GOlifas comes on .... few Golifas left on the plates have to thrown on the house roof for Goncoloz...........

how we celebrate with Turkish Cypriot tradation in my home ......

wishing u merry Christmast and Happy new year.......

Hopefully peace might be in our doors in 2010......

Growing up in Stroumbi the Great back in the 50s I remember waking up on Christmas day and hearing those horrid shrieks by the slaughtering pigs , as children we run from slaughtering house to house eager to collect the pigs urethra which would make a sturdy football once cleaned and blown to its full potential !!

Our main food was obviously pork , loukanina , lounza and Lardi cooked on the tsiminia -open fire place- were my favourites .
The village tradition was to kill a pig on the actual day of Christmas and not before !!
Haven been to village on Christmas day for many years now and haven't missed the pigs cry of help !!

This Christmas I shall be in Limassol and there will be no pig , a Turkey along with Makaronia tou fournou , roast potatoes salad and dips and I specifically asked that an abundance of Karaolous is available accompanied of course by a bottle or two of ... water !!

Not being overly fond of Turkey we're again having a mezze(ish) Christmas lunch.

The usual dips, then a few home made sheftalia cooked on real charcoal (cant be done with those lava rocks - no taste)

Then we'll be having a Kleftico for main course with the usual village salad and a piping hot bowl of fassoulaki to accompany

All washed down with a few beers of course

Just like any other weekend really

Off to football on boxing day and back to sons for evening buffet - For which the wife will do keftedes, kupepia and a dish of makaronia al forno and no doubt the boy will provide boring crisps , nuts and sausage rolls
