"Green Pope" Patriarch Bartholomew to appear on 60 Minutes
Patriarch Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, will appear on a segment of 60 Minutes this Sunday.
In addition to serving as spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians worldwide, Patriarch Bartholomew, recipient of the United States Congressional Gold Medal, is also regarded as a human rights leader and prominent environmentalist.
This past fall, Patriarch Bartholomew met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the Patriarch's environmental and human rights concerns, including the current situation of residents of the Ninth Ward in New Orleans. President Obama also thanked Patriarch Bartholomew for his commitment for the advancement of moral and environmental issues.
In his appearance on 60 minutes, Patriarch Bartholomew plans to discuss the persecution of Orthodox Christians worldwide, particularly in Turkey, where the Patriarch was born, raised and resides. Despite his many accolades and worldwide respect for his environmental and human rights work, Patriarch Bartholomew tells 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon that he and Turkey's ethnic minorities, though Turkish citizens, are denied their human rights and treated as "second class citizens" because they are Christians.
You can watch Patriarch Bartholomew's appearance on 60 Minutes on December 20th at 7pm EST.
