DOWNER HAS THE HOPE FOR A SOLUTION IN CYPRUS IN 2010.
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer is hopeful towards reaching a settlement in Cyprus in the new year.
Speaking to reporters on his departure from Cyprus for Christmas, Mr. Downer said he is pleased with the progress achieved so far by Mehmet Ali Talat and the Demetris Christofias at peace talks.
Underlining the need for holding simultaneous referenda in both sides of Cyprus once a political agreement is reached between the two leaders, the Special Adviser said that intensified consecutive talks, scheduled to take place in January, will become a turning point in the solution process.
He noted that the final decision on where to hold the consecutive talks will be made by the two leaders during today’s round of negotiations.
Downer said he believes that a good progress awaits the two sides in January.
“There really needs to be good progress in January”, he added.
Separately, Alexander Downer said that the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has plans to pay a visit to Cyprus at the beginning of 2010.
Yet, he added that the details of Ban’s visit are still being discussed.
Talat and Christofias will also take up this issue, Downer said.
