Turkey: occupier or liberator?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

According to the censuses which took place in Cyprus before the factual partition of the island, the Greek Cypriot community amounted to 447,901 (78,2%) in 1960, and to 498,511 (78,9%) in 1973. The Turkish Cypriot community numbered 103,822 (18,1%) people in 1960, and 116 000 (18,4%) in 1973. The total population of Cyprus was 572,707 in 1960 and 631,778 in 1973 (see Appendix 3, Table 1). An average rate of annual growth for both communities between 1960 and 1973 was similar and amounted to 0,8%. In consequence, the ethnic distribution of the population did not change between 1960 and 1974 and the proportion of each community remained stable.

0.8% growth is quite low, but that is the case for both communities.

3 of my father's sisters and their families migrated to England even before I left Cyprus in 1969...sorry i dont have a graphic to prove it...If you dont believe me,there is no hope for us ever having a meaningful conversation about this

Nobody questions what you know, but you might not know the whole story and this could lead you to false conclusions. I also have several relatives that emigrated abroad in the 50s and 60s. Cyprus was a poor country back then.

You are implying that the TCs have left Cyprus for economic reasons...Do you really believe that their predicament during the years 63-74 had nothing to do with it????

As I said in my other post, the conflict probably played some role. But the fact is that emigration abroad would exist anyway. If the conflict was the only reason for TC migration abroad then this migration would stop in 74. It didn't stop. It probably increased.

Also you can not blame the conflict only on GCs, right?

Folks, can we please get back to my question: Did Turkey sign any military treaties with the TRNC, or did they just decide to stay, ignoring the TRNC government?

Piratis, you can't quote suspect roc figures of population and come to a conclusion about TC de-population. The only way to do it is to find the figures of actual people who left. Where I was it wasn't just my family, every family was the same about 50%. The figures you are quoting are just plain wrong.

What do they say? YFred???
There are lies,damn lies,and statistics... :)

lies....lies...... where is the truth ?

There are more than 447,000Turkish Cypriots in the world. A census took place in the TRNC at the end of April 2006 the results of this census which are disputed by the Republic of Cyprus have said that the population of Northern Cyprus was 264,172 [2]. There has been no de facto census since 1960. [3] There are approx. 200,000 Turkish Cypriots in the United Kingdom, 50,000 in Australia, 10,000 in North America, 2,000 in the Republic of Cyprus and 5,000 spread across other countries. Number of Turkish Cypriots in Turkey is unclear; one Turkish Cypriot source [4] suggests 500,000 but this information is unverified.

He must be including all those illegal immigrants.

Does Cyprus need any advice from Australia regarding this issue?

Expat, the "trnc government" are the puppets of Turkey. The north part of Cyprus belongs to Republic of Cyprus. It doesn't belong to the occupier and it doesn't belong to the pseudo government that the occupier installed on the land they illegally occupy. In Cyprus there is only one real government, and only a real government can sign any treaties involving Cyprus.

No,Piratis I never blame anything on one side only...
You are right, the TC emmigration has increased over the years after 74,as they have realised there is very little chance of a solution which might end the nightmare they found themselves, stack between Turkey and the RoC...TCs have lost their share in the RoC government, and slowly they lost their political power and will to the settlers...With the assent of the AKP in Turkey the situation has become very difficult,as the TCs had to continually prove their Turkishness and Islamic credentials, not to mention the many social problems brought about by their isolation....
The numbers of the New Turkish Cypriots are on the increase however....Before long they will equal the number of GCs in the South...Then you will have hell of a time understanding their language...

Bir you cannot sway Piratis in the slightest and your attempts at reason will remain fruitless, the man sees you as a nusience in his way to his ultimate goal which is taking total control of the whole island and reducing your rights to minority status ruled by laws administered in the GC style well known to all. The current situation is a thousand time better than what they have in store for us, we made our choice in 1974 and although we are open to alternative options we cannot capitualte to GC demands, it would take us back 35 years and put us at their mercy in every way possible, do you want to be a foreigner in your homeland? We must never forget that we are as much Turkish as we are Cypriot, the new generation Turkish settlers will over time strike a balance as well and become more Cypriot but we must work hard to show them we have our own culture which in places differs from Turkey but on the whole we to are Turkish in origin and that they should adopt our customs and ways, this will help build the new stornger larger generation of Turkish Cypriots in a land although not currently recognized by the world will over time develop as it has been doing for the past 35 years as a country for those of us who do not want to be ruled purely by GCs and demand a say in our own future.

Bir, for me the language of the Settlers and the one of VP (the average TC as you call him) is the same ... and I don't mean Turkish ;)

Just look at the post of VP above and you will see that even himself has difficulty to express the difference between TCs and the Settlers.

VP has said many times that the south part of Cyprus is a foreign country to him, and of course he always insists that the north part of Cyprus is Turkish and foreign to us - but not foreign to Anatolian Turks! He many times said how he doesn't want to have GC neighbors because he doesn't want to even listen to Greek being spoken. If you are right and VP is indeed the "average TC" then it seems there is little difference between TCs and Turkish Settlers. The only difference (according to VP again) is that TCs were brought to Cyprus a bit earlier than the Settlers.

If by TCs we meant people like you Bir, then I am sure we could find common language. But if VP is indeed the "average TC" then believe me that there is no difference between him and a Settler, and there is no possibility of coming to an agreement. Those people do not recognize that the whole Cyprus belongs to all Cypriots, but instead insist that the north part of Cyprus which they took by force belongs to them. The same old partition aim of the 50s.

We are looking for alternatives Piratis, the more we see and understand the GC stance of which you are the perfect example we have no alternative but to embrace the settlers and build our own unique culture and people striving with Turkey to move forward where the TRNC will grow into a larger stronger and affluent TRNC. over time a relaxation of restrctions will materialize as the world cannot continue to chase the pie in the sky the Gc peddle as they themselves have proved they are taking everyone for a ride as they reject plan after plan.

We TCs are gradually coming to the ocnclusion that there is no deal with Gcs unless we capitulate to their demands and believe me that we will never do so the only alternative is to embrace what we have and work hard to conitnue to build a country albeit not recognized now that we the residents be they settlers of 30 years or 450 years ago (dont forget you are the ones who tell us we are not indigenous) can enjoy and thrive in.

How can anyone like me who does not know a united Cyprus which only lasted 3 years consider a country where GCs live speak greek and fly the greek flag and hate me for being a TC my country.
