A CF Good Will mission for a 19yo lady.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

A CF Good Will mission for a 19yo lady.

Postby Paphitis » Tue Dec 15, 2009 6:28 pm

In another thread, Deniz posted this deplorable picture of the desecrated grave site of his 19yo friend.

Perhaps Bir did not visit the north. I know he visited the south - our villages as well as Kivisil and Istinjo.

The above is the grave of an old friend (19 yr old lady) who was killed in a RTA, in my village of Anglissidhes. I hope the desecrators rot in hell.

ALL desecrators should join this one in hell too.

We all condemn such vile acts, but now its time for CF members to correct at least one wrong.

In the interests of inter communal relations and healing, I propose that we all dig deep and make a small contribution to raise money so that her tomb stone can be repaired/replaced.

Someone in Cyprus will need to volunteer to administer the donated funds and take responsibility for the repairs. A bank account will need to be set up where monies can be transferred.

I am willing to kick things off and make the first donation. I hope I have the support of every single CF member here.

19 years old is just too young to die.

Perhaps Deniz can also tell us a bit about this young lady's history.

Thank you all!

Yes, this story touched me and the desecration ain't right.

Hard times, but will make a very small pledge to help things on.

Thank you BillC!

The lack of response is quite unexpected, almost frightening.

This is an opportunity for CF to get into the spirit of reconciliation and contribute to something for the greater good of our island's future. As a result, I was expecting a much larger response. I think it is time people contribute to something more tangible instead of just words that have much lesser meaning than actions.

This is not a contest about who will donate the greater amount. All donations can be private if you wish, and all contributions are appreciated no matter what amount.

Furthermore, I was hoping that one of the longer term contributors such as GR!, Bananiot, or DT volunteer to administer the funds and repairs.

I really do hope that you all rally behind these efforts.

Thanks again!

I can see how everyone is so enthused about doing a good deed for our fellow compatriots and for the sake of a united Cyprus. Very inspiring!

Perhaps the forum administrators can also show their support.

Paphitis (posted from IPhone) - apologies for any errors.

Milti, the lady in question was the younger the sister of Yusufga ( your neighbor) and Leyla who passed away two months ago. Perhaps you could find out from your neighbor Yusufga if anything had been done.

I must thank Paphidis for his very thoughtful gesture.

We will see what further information we can get.

The 19 year old Aydin Hasan was killed in a road traffic accident whilst travelling in a car driven by her cousin - on the Klavya bridge approaching Larnaka in the year 1956. Many of you were not born yet.

I remember her funeral very well. All the village Greek and Turkish had attended. Her grave was next to my aunts grave. The family has never recovered from her loss. In my eyes she was a beauty and was very popular in our village. I remember her laughter. It still rings in my ears. My last memory of her was when I was helping her sort out her 'peanut' harvest. RIP Aydin.

Her name in Turkish meant 'bright light'/ 'brilliant.

I read this last night Paphitis and I immediately started to post to donate and then did not submit, thinking it may need mulling over.

I am still happy to donate, but because it is a recent grave and as Deniz has now pointed out, family are still alive, I think this may seem callous (as well-intentioned as I know is this gesture) in view of the fact that they would have repaired it if they so wished.

If it was vandals who did this, and not a consequence of bombs and war collateral, then perhaps they would strike again. The thought of people deliberately destroying something which signifies a life, a last reminder, is tantamount to attacking the weakest, the most helpless. Helplessness taken advantage of, fills me with horror. Such misguided opportunists roaming the streets vending frustration or anger purely by physical destruction annoys me no end. It is to the prevention of such conduct that we should be donating; and so perhaps we need to think further afield ...

Maybe others are mulling over consequences and precedents. But a general fund to help end such destruction, island-wide, may be more sensitive?

I cannot disagree with the above post. I would happily contribute to a Cyprus wide fund for the restoration of Cemeteries (where possible) and cultural heritage sites.
