A CF Good Will mission for a 19yo lady.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Get Real! » Thu Dec 17, 2009 4:12 pm

Paphitis, these kind of projects require spades, shovels, brooms, brushes, masonry glue, and plenty of labour… not money!

To prop up a single gravesite with a brand spanking new tombstone while the rest around it are in ruins, is the wrong way to go about it.

I think you seem to ignore the fact that this is only a symbolic gesture of good will towards our TC compatriots.

And since it is so easy to restore a cemetery with spades, shovels, brooms, brushes, masonry glue, and plenty of labour, then why have you not done so? If you are willing to coordinate another initiative, then please be my guest, as you will have my support.

In the mean time, this is all about good will and correcting one wrong. Just don't forget that!

Thanks Nikitas, and welcome aboard.

Stay tuned for further details on how you can make your donation after final confirmation is received from the family.

Once we get final clearance, it is my intention to set up a totally independent bank account under the auspices of the Technical Committee for the Preservation, Physical Protection and Restoration of the Immovable Cultural Heritage of Cyprus.

It is important that we have total transparency and that our efforts are coordinated with the above mentioned committee, if possible.

Oh right! And here I was thinking that you were doing it to show respect to the deceased… I guess you just can’t help yourself showing off to those that are still alive! As if you can fool them with a tombstone!

You stupidly ASSUME that three days of weeding and fixing is easy.

Via your binoculars? :?

You do not prop up a 21st century, $1000 granite/marble tombstone in the middle of a vandalized 20th century graveyard! For starters, there’s three decades of growth to be weeded before you can access any of those graves, and then you should try and preserve the original 20th century theme by cleaning and reusing the scattered materials.

There is nothing more we can do to show respect to the deceased!

We are not about to change the world with our symbolic gesture, but it's a small step in the right direction for downtrodden Cyprus.

You are the one that implied it was easy which is why I asked you why you did not spend a lazy weekend doing exactly what you were preaching, just like Bananiot and Erolz did!

And yes, 3 days of weeding and fixing is easy for me. I grew up with a paint brush and broom in my hand alongside my deceased father. I grew up with a hammer and a tool belt strapped to my waist.

So I know what hard labor is all about, because that's exactly what families like mine did in Australia to progress, whilst lazy sods like you fled because you couldn't bloody well take it. Australia only has opportunity and abundant wealth for the brave, but you just couldn't make it! :(

Not at all.

A trip has been scheduled, again, but is postponed for now due to other commitments. Hopping on planes and traveling is not a problem for me. I only pay 5% fare, which means I can travel to Cyprus for about 100 Euros.

Well then I am sure you will let us borrow your lawn mower.

The effort will hopefully be coordinated through the auspices of the Technical Committee for the Preservation, Physical Protection and Restoration of the Immovable Cultural Heritage of Cyprus.

I am certain, that clearing a few weeds won't be an issue for us.

Look Paphitis, if you’re serious about this go have a chat with Erol who has experience with these things, because the reality of these graveyards is not like you seem to imagine, and there may also be legal issues involved if there’s a REPLACEMENT of original tombstones!

Like I have said before, Milti and Deniz will be speaking to the family which should take care of any "legal issues". We are not going to cause more damage but repair some of the damage that has been done.

Bananiot and Erolz are more than welcome to get involved. In fact I would be delighted if they did. I would be even more delighted if you got involved as well.

I know the realities of these forgotten and destroyed grave yards.

OH and btw, I will be having a chat with Bananiot and Erolz about this. It can't hurt at all, and I will value their input. I hope to also value yours one day as well. :?

Thank you so much Jerry! :D

The priority at the moment is to establish contact with the family, and Milti said that he should be able to do this just after Christmas.

Speaking of Christmas, I wish you and yours a merry one!
